Dynajet kits
I have been looking at a stage one kit for my 81GS1000GL (BS34SS Mikuni's) for a V & H header mod and stock airbox set up. I have seen some other posts not too complimentary of aftermarket jet kits. Have you had good results with the quality these kits or should I try to cross referance the DJ kit to Mikuni OEM jets in the same sizes? The dyna site calls for the below jet sizes. I spoke with thier tech support and they recommended the DJ118 main with the fuel needle and main air jet as listed for a pipe only mod. Thanks for any advice. Air temp of 10 below this morning and I am dreaming of riding after the polar bears leave my yard.

There are folks on this forum who really know their stuff on this topic. I am NOT one of them
I have recently jetted one of my bikes with the dynajet kit and it went AOK. No complaints...took a while to get it right. In the end. If I knew then what I knew now I would buy some jets from Dennis Kirk and shim the needles.
I believe the same results can be realized with less cash outlay if you are pateint.

I have installed the Dynojet (K&N) jet kits in two motorcycles and in both instances the results were very worthwhile and it wasn't very difficult. There was some fine tuning involved, mostly finding the best needle position. On these older bikes there really isn't a better bang-for-the-buck performance modification than a good aftermarket pipe, PODs, and jet kit. My '83 1100E has a Supertrapp pipe, K&N PODs and a stage III jet kit. It starts, idles, and runs better and stronger than it ever has. I also had a stage I kit in my '88 Hurricane 1000 with Supertrapp slip-ons and a K&N replacement air filter. The results were definitely noticeable but not to the extent of the GS.
Thanks,

I kind of thought the bad posts were referring to some of the more fly by night carb kit supply people. The dynajet kit was referred from V & H tech support person I consulted on pipe fitment. One nice thing about the kit is that it does come with both stage 1 and 3 kits in case I decide to go to the pods. I just wanted to make sure the quality was good. I also thougt I might be able to save a few bucks with the Mikuni jets if I can cross them on size to offset the cost of an ignition kit / coils / wires which I am also going to do. Trying to get the most bang for the buck. (AKA Cheapa**) Thanks82 GS850L - The Original http://s224.photobucket.com/albums/d...ePics067-1.jpg

Sorry to hear about your bad experience. Did you end up using Mikuni stock size jets? My carbs have a #115 main and #40 pilot. Maybe I will try the pipe and do a chop test before getting the kit. I would assume if it runs good and the plugs have the correct color it would be OK from there.82 GS850L - The Original http://s224.photobucket.com/albums/d...ePics067-1.jpg

Most tech's agree that alls most people need to do after adding a performance pipe to an early 80's street driven bike is shimming the needles .020"
Heres is a bit more positive jetting info I experienced:

Thanks for the info, I think I will try your method and bump up the one size on the main and pilot as you did. I will post when I am done for others to use as well. The dyna kit did seem expensive for what you get.82 GS850L - The Original http://s224.photobucket.com/albums/d...ePics067-1.jpg

I'd have to agree with Mr. Clam. Just a pipe mod shouldn't heed you to buy the $120 kit and go through some possibly frustrating times to get it jetted right. On my 1100 stock jets were 45 pilots and 107.5 mains. With the addition of the 4-1 I went to 47.5 pilot, 117.5 mains, shimmed the needle two washers (one notch) and removed the airbox lid. Bike ran great but I have a problem of always wanting more! Now I have what you see below.1983 GS 1100E w/ 1230 kit, .340 lift Web Cams, Ape heavy duty valve springs, 83 1100 head with 1.5mm oversized SS intake valves, 1150 crank, Vance and Hines 1150 SuperHub, Star Racing high volume oil pump gears, 36mm carebs Dynojet stage 3 jet kit, Posplayr's SSPB, Progressive rear shocks and fork springs, Dyna 2000, Dynatek green coils and Vance & Hines 4-1 exhaust.
1985 GS1150ES stock with 85 Red E bodywork.
