Dyna ignition for GS550 no-go, any other options at all?

    Dyna ignition for GS550 no-go, any other options at all?

    Ignition problems started last summer. Bike has been waiting for replacement igniter/parts since then. No luck, so I finally decided to go with the Dyna S ignition, using a mechanical advance from an older model bike. After buying the Dyna system, and buying the right mechanical advance for the Dyna, the ignition plate came off today to show only two mounting screws... completely different mounting system. Not only are the screws not right, but the whole Dyna plate is quite a bit larger than the original, and will not even fit into the recess... So am I completely out of luck on this one? Aside from going through the entire wiring harness to find whatever short caused the original ignition pickup/igniter to go bad, then finding another igniter, is there anything I can do? I don't suppose a Frankenstein job done on the Dyna plate with a dremel to make it fit has any chance of working?

    Anyone want a nice GS550 parts bike? Really tired of looking at this thing not run.

    Get an older gs550 points system, Maybe Check Boyer Bransden Ign systems UK
    If you can get a machinest to make a new plate I would bet you could make it work

      Ignition is really a fairly simple thing. As long as the rotor triggers those pickup coils by passing close by, and as long as the timing advance is working, it should work. If you've already bought the Dyna, and depending on whether you can still return it or not, why not try modifying it to fit?

      How well do the new rotor and the timing advance unit fit?

        Don't know if I want to mess with an older system, again.

        And,

        Other than being long, they fit fairly well. If I try to put the cover on, it hits the bolt and has a half an inch gap.

        Definitely considering either trimming the Dyna plate and drilling holes for the mount, or drilling and tapping holes into the stock plate, allowing me to attach the actual Dyna electronics to the stock plate. Don't know if I want to hack up a $100 part or not if I'm going to cut my losses with the bike.

          Boyer Bransden do an ignition unit for the 16 valve 550, comes with the ingnition unit and pickups, baseplate and rotor. Couple of minor bug bears with it though!

          Firstly the rotor needs a spacer to fit properly, not a major job to fabricate one.

          Secondly the unit sparks on every half cycle rather than on every full cycle like the Suzuki unit, mechanically it makes no difference to the engine's running but it does mean that the electronic tacho gives reading twice the actual rpm. I led to beleive this can be sorted by adding a resistor in the tacho circuit. I still haven't tried it on my 550 after having the unit for 4 years, but thats due to having too many projects on the go!

            I have ground down the edges of a Dyna backing plate that was too large to fit in a bike I wanted to use it on. As long as the rotor mates to the crankshaft end and you can get the crank triggers mounted with a gap within specs for the Dyna, it will work just fine. Its a trial and fit process. Kind of tedious, but not particularly difficult. Might take an hour or so with a file.
