Thread Repair Help
I own an '85 GS550L, anyone know what thread kit I need to fix a thread on the oil pan? Not really sure as to what size I need etc. Also, anyone have a manual PDF format or a link to a manual for this bike? Thanks for your help.Tags: None

Take one of the bolts with you to the hardware store/auto parts store and determine what size it is. As for the book on your bike, clymer makes a descent owner/repair manual for these bikes $15-20. Or, if you're just looking for the order of assembly for it, you can check out Bike Bandit online and they should have most of the fiche online. If you plan on keeping it, I'd say go to your favorite book store or online and order one, it will save you a lot of time and frustration.

Are you talking about the drain plug? That is same as 14mm spark plugs, there are many companies that make thread kits, helicoil fix-a-thread...ect
I like the haynes manual best for the 83-86 550's can't remember the manual #....
Good luck

Yes, I am talking about the drain plug, I need to repair the threads on the oil pan cause they got stripped. I have heard heli-coil is a good co. for thread repair. You say to get the spark plug thread repair 14mm?

14x1.25 True value has Precision thread kits #88006, Napa Has Heli coil, don't have the number and many auto parts store sell a Fix -a-thread kit.
It's a common size
They all work good, just locktite the one you use.

I've had great luck with Heli-coil, but then again, it's the only one I've used. You will need a good drill and a tap. Some kits come with the tap. If you already have the tap, then you can save some cash by just buying the coil and "key" that goes with it.
The tricky part will be access to the oil pan. I'd remove it, but that may not be so easy.

Rather than use a helicoil I used a Wurth Timesert 14 mm short plug insert. install as per instructions and grind off the excess that protrudes into the sump. Its held on my 1982 Katana for over 10 years and numerous oil changes
