If I throttle up it will die

New owner of a GS850, I did a lot of reading. Who ever did the carb clean tutorial was awesome. The only thing was showing a rebuild explaining what all of the jets did if tweaked.
The question I have is that I cleaned the carbs, placed them back on the bike, started it up. Idles great. If I chock up then it revs up. If I throttle up it will die. I do not have the air filter on and the bike sat for at least 3 years. It is running from a home made temp gas tank to see if it will start. Do I need to go back into the cabs and do another cleaning, or do I now need to adjust the cabs to sync them together?

Thank you for all your help. I learned a lot just by reading other posts.

The bike WILL die at anything higher than idle without the airbox/filter.
Make sure there are no air leaks.
This has been discussed a million times - do a search.

did a serch, must not have asked ther right Q's

I did do a lot of searching and reading before I asked. Did not pick up on it. Sorry if for my remedial question but when being a newbie, I probably did not ask the right question for the search to respond with the right post. I was looking for carb related issues.

Thank you so much for the help I have learned so much by reading the posts, answer questions that I know I will have soon.

I wasn't stamping on you - just advising.
Keep at it - you'll get there.

Sounds like it's a bit lean. Maybe try raising the needles, as it may be lean in the mid range, and it also may be lean at the air mixture screws. If you snap the throttle open hard at idle and it bogs before revving up, it's still lean on the idle mixture screws. Also, none of this applies if the air filter isn't installed, or if it's leaking air somewhere.
Good luck! I'll also try to find you a link someone else put up about a great site that explains carb tuning VERY well.

            ok Great

Thank you so much for your information. I will be looking forward to the listing giving the tune up information.

            Thank you.

I am just glad the thing kicked over and would idle.

I've gotta give credit to Dink for originally posting this link, but I think it may be somewhere in general info in this forum. If not, it should be. It give great info on tuning carbs:

I'm not sure how to post it as a link, but cut & paste will work just as well.

I'm going to assume you have CV carbs. These have large chambers on the top.

If so, these carbs are designed from the ground up to work with a certain amount of upstream vacuum. The airbox and filter are an integral part of that design. Take them off and most, if not all, of the carb circuits won't operate properly.

As mentioned, there are many threads here about tuning carbs with replacement filters and exhausts. However, if you want the shortest way to get your bike running properly, put on a stock airbox/filter.

Your 850 MUST, as stated above, have the airbox on and sealed well in order for it to run properly in stock form. Float adjustment is important. Carb synch is also a must and that involves making sure your valves are properly adjusted as well. O-rings etc.
