    Fork Oil Level '78 GS750E

My garage has eaten my Clymer manual and I need to know the fork oil level for my '78 GS750E. I set them at 140mm after installing Progressive springs and replacing seals. Now I have forl oil spewing at the boots. Hoping I set the level too high and don't have bent forks or something. Hardly any oil was left in either fork when Idid this job. I weigh 210lbs. and used 20w oil for a firmer ride. Any comments?

Did you measure the fork oil level with the forks collapsed all the way? 140mm should be perfectly safe if it's measured correctly.

I know it's measured with the forks collapsed all the way, but I can't remember if you leave the springs in or out.

Forks collapsed, springs out. I did some searching around here on the website to get these facts. Just hoping Clymer manual (or Suzuki) says level should be lower. bike rides much better but oil is oozing out around the fork boots...

Someone out there must be able to tell me whether I got the oil level right or not. Please look in your manual and let me know. 140mm, forks collapsed, springs out. Thanks...

I don't own a 750 but do have a clymers manual for it. According to Table 2 pg. 269, fork oil level for 79 and earlier models is 206 mm (8.1 in) with fork compressed and springs out. 79 L models were 202mm and TSCC models were 229mm.
I replaced my springs last year (gs650) and I thought the instructions for the progressives suggested a maximum oil level to be used if the recommended level was higher. I can't remember the value but a search on progressive springs will bring up the thread. I think progressive springs are heavier guage than stock and displace more oil so they need less oil. Good luck.

After I did a quick search to confirm what I had said, it dawned on me that 140 is actually a lot more than 206 mm; forgive me, morning with 5 kids and wife bugging me.
I believe the 140mm is the maximum amount that progressive springs recommends. In your situation, use the 206mm. It states in the manual this is approximately 180cc or 6 oz of oil. That really isn't a lot of oil. Good luck.

Waterman, I love you! Regards to the wife and kids. This means I have too much oil and all I have to do is suck out another 66mm of oil with my Mighty Vac. Thanks again, GS rule!
