    12V to 14V

    82 GS650L

When i get the bike running, the battery only registers around 12 volts, no influction on rev's, bad rectifier? plus does the rectifier have a ground or is the ground a mount to the frame? im asking because there's a stud coming outta the rectifier but no bolt mounting it to the frame

run a jumper wire from the regulator mounting bolt to the negative (ground) terminal of the battery.
and also clean or better yet replace / eliminate the stator to regulator connections, and see if that helps.

R/R has a black ground that is usally "grounded" on a bolt in the battery box. . Yes R/R should be bolted firmly to batttery box (or where ever) for purposes of a heat sink and well as an electrtical ground. But probelm with the electrical "gounding" of the R/R unit itself to the battery box and the black wire "grounded" to the battery box is that the battery box may not be very well grounded to the frame, and the battery negitive may not be very well grounded to the frame. Hence the recomendations for running a wire from the R/R itself to the negitive of the battery, making your own direct ground wire. So all that is one reason why, another reason why is 'because Leon Focus Frenzy said so'.

So there are reasons for adding that ground wire.

For further checks to determine the cause of your problem you can get the stator papers fault finding chart from this web site. The test where you measure the volts of the stator while stator disconnected with engine running is the big test that tells you the most.

yea the r/r is grounded to battery, still shows no indication of boosting charge to 14 volts, i try the stator pages and like the first step is to get above 13 volts, and if not, then clean terminals and start over, im just going in small circles

Break out of those small circles. Read the next part of the stator papers.

Remove the three yellow wires from the input side of the R/R and measure the AC voltage with the engine running about 4-5,000 rpm. Number the wires 1, 2, and 3 (in your head is fine). Measure voltage between 1 & 2, then 2 & 3, then 3 & 1. All readings should be about the same and about 70 or more volts AC. This will tell you if your stator is good. If this test is good, you will probably need a new R/R. Check eBay for Honda versions as they usually have heavier wires and better heat sinks. Or you can spring for a new one with a guarantee from any of the aftermarket retailers.
