starter slow turning

i searched old threads on this subject but couldnt find an exact answer.my 1980 gs 1000glt has the following problem:If it is cold,say below 32 degrees the bike will hardly turn over,the battery sounds like it is dead.Once the temp warms up to our usual 75 degrees like it is now, then the bike might give me a few solenoid clicks before starting,then crank slow, then start.After the first start of the day the bike wont do this again.But lately it ran the battery down so much trying to get it to crank i figure the starter is done.it has 33,000 miles on the bike,the battery is almost new.I am guessing take the starter out,cean it up,replace the brushes,emery cloth the thingamajig the brushes rub against and it will be fixed?
1.Where do you buy brushes?part numbers anyone?
2.I have a electex stator that was put on about 1 year ago.
Am i on the right track?

Check all your wireing connections before you do anything.

what weight oil are u using ?

The battery may be "almost new" but may not have a full charge, or
has a bad/weak connection somewhere.

I'd check connections before ripping a starter apart.
Or call Stocker starters, they are fast and reasonable.

GS1000E been stored for most of the winter here in the UK yet I keep going out and giving her a warm up run every month or so.
Went out in February to start her and had the same problem. Normally its fuel on my one....
Checked the battery even though it's been on a tenderizer all the time it's not run and the battery was Kn**kered...
New battery starts first time now, so I would go for battery myself.

Ground connections. If the battery tests out good, clean all ground connections. Then, maybe, if that doesn't cure it, the starter is probably bad.

Another vote to check the battery first. They are not fully charged when you get them unless the shop topped it off before sending it out the door with you.

Not tha i am surprised by that,but definitely happily surprised.The other battery was 6 months old to the day and it was definitely the problem.I bought a new one,acid in,14 hour charge,the bike turns over quicker and starts better than it ever has.Thanks GS guys!!! 75 degrees and i am going ridin'.Yee ha!
