    Is my airbox missing something?

    82' GS850GL, new acquisition

So I just opened my airbox and found what was left of a UNI filter 2436 (chunks missing, possibly from mice). There was no frame holding it in like I have seen in my Clymer manual. The clymer manual shows some sort of frame holding the OEM filter in place with some screws on the side. Am I missing something here or does the uni filter not require the frame? I was looking at getting the KN1200 replacement, would it need the frame?

I dont know much about 850s but if you go to Bikebandit and search the OEM parts youll find good diagrams. My filter snaps in my airbox with a spring clip and is $27. Yours is over $45. ?? Item #2

may be the wrong filter, there should be a divider between the lower half and the top half of the air box and the filter slides into the lower half in nutches in the sides and seals against the divider.

the foam seal will break down and turn into a funky sticky crumbs, I had to replace the seal on my vintage K&N filter.

The OEM filter does have a steel cage with the element over it. The screws are to take it apart to replace the foam. I had a K & N that came in one of my bikes and I believe it is a complete assembly including the cage. I have an extra cage if you want it. The foam element on it is shot and would need to be replaced but UNI makes one for it. If you had rodents you should pull the entire box and clean it out. You can do a search and use the weatherstripping or silicone fix to re-seal the box. The top of the filter assembly also has a seal to the underside of the box inlet and that seal needs to be tight also. These bikes are very air sensitive and need the boxes to have good seals all around. Enjoy the bike.
