Valve cover install help please

That's the cam chain guide all right. You should push down on it while rotating the motor a bit , so the guide and the cam chain go down together.

You can push pretty hard on the guide. Just don't tap or hit it. Pull off the cover you are trying to install and use a small block of wood to push the guide back down. Make sure its side pegs are aligned into the recesses in the head

Pull of the ignition cover and with a 19mm wrench on the LARGE nut turn the motor while pushing down on the cam chain guide. It should pop right in place.

Na didnt work. I tried that a number of times So the cams are out right now and I am waiting on a new chain guide.

I'm in process of rebuilding my gs1100 and will be putting the upper back together soon. I've come across a part that I don't remember taking off that sounds similiar. It's seems to be a rectangular plastic cam chain guide. I can't remember if this came off before or after the cams but the manual doesn't seem to mention it.
It sounds to me though that if you haven't removed the cams and this part is off, that you wouldn't have to remove them to put it back on.

I had to remove the cams to get it off, the smaller rectangular one sounds to me like 3) 12776-45001 HOLDER, CAM CHAIN GUIDE. My issue is with No 1 (item 2 in pic) chain guide

damn,I just ran into this same problem when trying to fit the valve cover on.I put the guide in upside down! :-x

That sucks! Off some the cams Good luck and be very careful reinstalling them so they are 100% correct or you will be doing it again!

My very stupid question (coming from a mechanic who should "just know"), is how do I get the valve cover off. It's not going over the cam chain cover, gets caught on the frame. I feel a little stoopid at this point, I'm tearing the engine down to replace my blown head gasket....... without removing it from the frame.

Wiggle it lol. Yea that part sucks. Take the breather cover off first to give you a little more room. Slide it to the right and down while lifting the left side. Make sure all wires and cables are pushed out of the way Good luck!

Hey, thanks, I was kind of thinking in that direction, but, y'know I like to take off as little as possible to do the job.....Like I said, some days I come up as stoopid.........:-D

This is the part where previous planning comes into play.

When trying to remove the valve cover, make sure the gasket stays with the head, not the cover. There are two reasons for this. 1) The cover will be about 1/16" thinner and just might make it out a little easier. 2) Because there isn't much room for the cover to slide out, the gasket will catch on something, usually the cam chain sprocket in the middle, and rip the snot out of it. If the gasket is sitting on the head, that won't happen. 8-[

All I needed to remove the valve cover was to take the breather cover off....thanks for the help, worked fine, should have the bike torn down by 1:30, clean it up and continue to wait on my gasket set......
