    Piston replacement

we have two damaged pistons on our 1979 GS 1000 due to a disasembaly error on our part. Can i go to the junk yard and replace just these two pistons?

we do not have the money to drop $400 on a new set.

During the cylinder block removal we experianced difficulties .

one of the studs got jameed due to a sludge build up or something like that. So we removed the rings on the two outer pistons and lowered the block back down inorder to clear the buildup, and remove the block.when we lowered the block back down it made hard contact with the center two pistons and damaged them.

In doing so we left two notches on the perimiter of the pistons . The notches are small,Will this significantly effect performance? Will it cause a piston Nock? Do i have to replace all 4 Pistons .

    Thanks,
    Brett And Sara

Can you take some good sharp close-up photos and post them? There's no way to tell for sure from just a verbal description.

I have replaced one of a set of four before when doing an engine, it all depends on what you want, if you are going to run your machine at 9000rpm a lot, then NO, replace the set, if you will not redline it then you can probably get away with replacing one or two.

Take your old one with you and have a shop measure the one you want to replace it with to see if it is the same piston for absolutely sure.
