    1985 GS550L - Electrical Issue - need some help

Howdy folks, first time caller here and admittedly a motorcyle rookie. I bought this bike a little while ago as a starter bike and haven't put very many miles on it. Yesterday, as I was working to get my bike ready for spring I had been charging the battery up with a trickle charger. I was anxious to start it up but I grew impatient waiting for the battery to fully charge as it was getting late. So, I did the stupid thing and went to jump it with my car. I hooked up the jumper cables and turned the key to on, and the lights came on just like they should. I hit the ignition button and the power was suddenly cut to the bike. I keyed off and back on but the lights did not come back on. I unhooked the cables and checked the fuses, or at least the 5 fuses on the side of the bike - if there are more then I don't know about them - and none of the fuses were blown. What else should I be loooking for? I'm certain I blew something when I hit the ignition with the jumper cables hooked up, but I'm unsure where to look.
    Thanks.

A fuse may look good when in fact it is blown. Get a multimeter and verify.

Was the car running? You shouldnt jump a bike off a running car. I would just swap out the main fuse and see if you get power. I've had fuses that looked good but went to remove them and they crumbled. When you have the fuses out clean all the connections. Also check for melted wires that lead come off your battery and that lead to your selenoid. Clean both connections on your battery and the main ground that bolts down to your engine.

Yep it was running. I'll try all this tonight and let you know what happens. I've also taken nabrams advice and looked through some of the older posts on similar topics. If replacing the main fuse doesn't work and I can't see any melted wires I'll take a look at the R/R.
