'82 GS850GL How Many Clutch Springs
So I have some high RPM slipping (6000-7000 RPM) while upshifting hard. I've read posts by a few (bwringer...etc) that say the plates never go bad, just replace OEM springs. I'm lazy and don't want to take the cover off just to find out how many springs I need... can anyone clue me in (I would guess 6)? Also does anybody have any tricks to the replacement process? The springs are part number 15 correct?

Six, and replace them one at a time.
Be VERY careful tightening them -- they strip out at .00001 foot-pound over the recommended torque.
And get the clutch cover gasket. You'll want that.1983 GS850G, Cosmos Blue.

Thanks for the torque hints. Just to confirm the torque specs, my Clymer gives a torque of 8-9.5 ft/lb (anyone else have the same for a GS850GL?), so stay on the low end to be safe?? Also, one post I read said that you really don't need to drain the engin oil before removing the clutch cover (not much oil will come out).... is this true?

Do it on the side stand and no oil will escape.
