Identify this part? Picture in post

The part was under the left side panel, and after it got wet during a massive rain storm last year the bike died. A friend of my brothers did some debugging and figured this part was the culprit. So...what is it?

Not sure what it is, but here's a replacement:

Cool, I guess I should have tried searching Ebay or Google first...my bad. But thanks for the quick response, now I just have to buy one that works and off I go!

Make sure that you check ALL of the numbers on the unit to make sure the replacement matches. Good luck.

Looked at my bike, the manual and the microfiche and I would say that was the turn signal generator.

However, could a turn signal control unit "kill" the bike? I'm thinking there has to be more to it than just a turn signal controller. Perhaps there were some flaws in the troubleshooting process?!?!?!

Ugh, I wish I had not seen the last few responses. The troubleshooting done by my brother's friend was quick, but he is a handy fellow that has a fairly good mechanical/electrical intuition.

I know very little about about bikes and when I have had troubles in the past this guy has been successful at identifying and fixing the issues. He has since moved away so my hope was to replace this unit and have the bike roar to life.

The unit seems a bit big for a turn signal relay though, and I cannot imagine any kind of turn signal relay killing the bike. I checked a service manual for a 1980 GS1000 and it does fit the location very well....I will check the wiring diagram and see if breaking the connection at the turn signal relay does anything.

But the first poster had an ebay link to a CDI unit that looks EXACTLY like the unit that I have hear, so I will take it into a Suzuki shop this morning and see if someone can positively ID it.

Ah, you have checked your fuses, right?

It is the turn signal control unit. It is so big because of the self cancelling funtion I'm guessing. Both of those relays on that side of the battery box are for the turn signals. I do not believe either would cause the bike to quit running.

OK, I took the part to the local Suzuki dealer asked him to identify it, and was told it was the CDI by the mechanic there. I asked if it could be a turn signal relay and he said no, it was sealed and the older GS bikes had fairly small CDI's. He then proceeded to tell me the function of a few wires, and he sounded confident so I was going to buy a new one and he said not to since it was a $200+ part new (CDN) and that it might not be the reason my bike quit running.

Confusing stuff here, I normally trust a mechanic but I am unsure as the people on this board are also trust worthy.

EDIT: Yes, fuses are OK. And I replaced them all (they are cheap) since I have had it happen before where they appear to be fine but really they are not.

If you have a Clymer Manual for the bike you may find the process to test the CDI. I would, however, recommend going over as much of the wiring on the bike as you can. The wiring on these old bikes is brittle and wou may have a simple short in the right place causing the problem.

If you do need a CDI, check out some junkyards. You'll pay a lot less than new and the usually give you a little bit of a guaruntee.
