    Question on GS1000 wheels

I saw some wheels for a 78 GS1000 advertised as being 18" in the rear. Did some have 18" wheels? I thought they were all 17" ????

    wheels

The "S" models had the 18 inch rears. Do a google search for GS1000s and have a look

I know some of the L models (like my 650 and 850) have 16-inch rear tires, and the standard models are larger, but I am not sure if they are 17- or 18-inch. There is also the possiblity of a difference between chain-drive and shaft-drive models.

The standard model came with an 18" wire rear wheel. 17" wheels were standard on the E model.

I put a 18" mag on my 78 1000. Used one off a 550 (same part# on the 79 GS1000S) and put larger bearings in it. You need to use the spacers from a spoke wheel and space the caliper about 3mm inboard to make it fit though. (The 1000S spacers are N/A)
Also, the 18" wheels are 2.15" wide, the 17" wheels are 2.50"

Rear spacers are different between the 18 and 17. I have a few sets of the 17", but normally run Akront 18" rims (spoked) front and back (using a GS400 or any other 18" front wheel model speedo drive). The cast wheels should be good if you can find them.

Most gs550E have 18 in the back. A good match is an 18" in the front from a smaller gs 450 or 250. This is what I have now. 130/80/18 rear and 100/90/18 front.............If any one knows of another model with a 18" front let me know. Parts from a small gs (below 550) are harder to find.
