    Who's good at electrics???

    Put the battery in the GS1000 today and NOTHING. Not a damn thing. Completely dead. Checked the battery voltage OK at 12.7v Got the whole thing apart looking for a short. Could it be ...let's see now..... the regulator, rectifier, starting coil or stator aaahhhhh!!!!

      Start easy and work towards more difficult. Start by just replacing all the fuses. They may look good but some may be 20 years old. If not that clean the main ground off the battery that attaches to the engine. Then clean the connections on the solenoid and starter. Clean the ignition switch with wd-40. Then clean the kill switch and the starter button. Bypass the clutch safety switch. Do you have a kick stand safety switch? If not any of these then start checking all connections including the ones in the headlight bucket.

      If you have a bad stator or R/R you should still be able to start the bike with a strong battery. You might blow a fuse after starting the engine with a bad R/R though.

        Not me!!!! But I'll try and help anyways :-D

        There is a switch in the clutch lever perch, check that first. I just check 'em by bridging the gap in the switch with a penny.

        Then check the starter relay. It's that little deely (I have no idea how much you know about all this stuff, forgive me if I sound patronizing, it's not my intention) under the left side cover, has a cylindrical bit on the bottom and two wire attachments posts on the top. You can check it by bridging these two posts with a screwdriver. If you get nothing at all, then the relay isn't getting power somehow or it's broken. Since there's not much between it and the battery (when you see the relay you might find this sentence funny, or my sense of humour retarded 8-[ ) it's probably broken.

        Since you say you are getting nothing at all, not even a click, I think you'll find the problem in these areas. If the relay is getting power, it will 'click' quite audibly. So the problem is going to be in the starter circuit, before the starter itself.

        Report back and tell what you find! Troubleshooting is fun! \\/

              Actually, You could remove the stator and R/R and the engine would run normally. :-)

                OK so you put the battery in the bike.

                Rumor has it that, with some of these new batteries, you actually have to connect the wires.

                Imagine that!









                Seriously, though, use a test light and follow the wires that lead from the battery.
                You will soon enough find where the light stops working.

                  Still working on it

                  I have a very good voltmeter. Checked all the fuses ok. Following back every circuit, of course it's in the main circuit. With the voltmeter across the battery it reads 12.7v then when I turn on the ignition it goes to zero. To me that means the same phase and the ground is off somewhere. Checked and cleaned the engine ground OK. Still looking aaaaaahhhhhh!
