More love for the little 1983 650gld

So I know that the way the 1983 GS650 shaft drive tranny works is that it puts power directly to the shaft in 5th, but I feel like 5th is so small and that when I push my little GS up to 6,000 rpm that she does not love it as much as 5 or 5.5. So I am wondering if I can do some conversion to get it to cruise at high speed without sounding like I am hammering it. I know you can take her beyond that, but vibrations get killer if you want to hold 85 on the highway... you know?
Also any simple and cheap conversions to get more pep are welcome.
Lastly, I had the bike on the trailer and had the shocks almost completely compressed, and I don't think the bike has ever looked more bad ass. Anyone know of shocks that will fit and shorten the front end, or of any lowering kits?
    Thanks.

They do have a tendency to vibrate a bit on the upper portion of the midrange and I've noticed it on longer rides, however, there is no "easy" fix for changing the gear ratio. It most likely can be done, but you'de be looking into some custom fab and a good calculator, to get things to work. And keep in mind, this would be done on the ring and pinion gears and you will be limited there, based on the room inside the torque tube.

As far as making changes to the transmission gearing, I wouldn't even attempt it and I've been known to try almost anything, once! :?

Hy; I had a similar problem in my kat 650.I fixed it synching the carbs at 4500 or 5000 RPM. Today my bike runs without vibrations from idling to 7000 rpm.....but at idling speed sounds a bit rough, I donīt mind because I never ride at idle speed.

Ditto on the sync. If you want to change drive ratio get a chain driven bike.:-D

          Thanks all

I will prolly try the cleaning and sync it up. Chain drive means maintanence, but I might be looking for something faster and more comfortable for the long hauls so I will prolly go for it then. The GLD was a good first bike, but its time for the gixxer...

A rear drive unit from a 850/1000 will change the gearing may require minor mods to make it fit. You will not like the changes The smaller engines make power with RPM's. Does your bike like starting in 2th gear from a stop?

Just pop in an 850 motor.

Does the 850 fit? IF it fits I would definitely look for one.
