Apparently a previous owner has re-wired the stator-to-rectifier connection. The white/green wire used to feed the headlight (which was switched before 1980), then continue on to the rectifier. This would minimize the amount of excess current the regulator had to dump when the headlight was off. Now that the lights are ON all the time, it makes sense to connect the third stator wire directly to the rectifier/regulator.

I know a picture is worth a thousand words. How much is a diagram worth? 8-[

OK, I'll just sketch it here:

There are three wires that come from the stator. they could be any combination of colors, depending on the year and model of bike. There are five wires coming out of the rectifier/regulator (r/r) assembly. Two of them are obvious, red goes to the battery +, black goes to battery -. The other three get connected to the stator wires.

            Phew! 82 words...that's barely a pencil drawing. \\/

stevs my bike is 1980 gs-450st it has a tr igniter on it the three wires from the stator are pluged into the tr igniter if that is the signal generator on the right side of the eng. the rectifer/regulator wires go in at the starter.

PM your email and I'll send you a scan of the Haynes wiring diagram for the 450S.

Email is on the way, its near 4MB as I didn't want it to be hard to read with too much compression.

Let me know if you have any problems receiving it.

The signal generator(s) are on the right side of the crank, and they do plug in to the ignitor. What you are concerned with would be from the stator on the left side of the crank. You say the "wires go in at the starter." Actually, they just go down near the starter, then continue on to the stator on the end of the crank. Follow that wire bundle up and back from the starter, you will see the three wires come out of the bundle eventually. That is where they should connect directly to the regulator/rectifier, which is then connected to the battery.
