The PO replaced the one coil off of a GS1100 ('81) or so the grease pen indicates, I measured the resistance of the primary coil and had a fairly consistant reading of 4.8ohms. After checking out the forums, a lot of people who have an 1100 series bike have replaced their factory coils with Dyna Greens (3ohm) but after checking out Dyna's site they suggest using a coil of the same impedance or slightly higher impedance which would suggest the Dyna Black coils (5ohm). I am not planning on replacing my ignition system (the wife is already yelling at me about the money I will be spending for coils) so should I go for the Black 5ohm or the Green 3ohms?

Another Quick Coil Question
I'm planning on replacing my coils as I suspect one of them (which was previously replaced by the PO from the scrap yard) is causing a problem where 2 of my cylinders aren't firing/running dead. I need to investigate the problem some more, but basically I will be riding along and then suddenly the bike has no power, if I pull over and fire it back up generally everything will be fine for a while. Its very hard to reporduce this problem, it appears to only occur at highway speeds and I suspect after I ride over a bump (but not always, sometimes I have no problems at all for a ride). The wires are cracked, the boots on one of the plugs broken and its time to replace them so now to my question...

So after calling and reading some more my head is going nearly bald from all of the scratching... Called Dyna, they thought the 4.5ohm reading was odd, called a Suzuki dealer, they said the primaries are between 3-5ohms, checked the other service manual I acquired thanks to aedi006 (another huge kudos for that awesome post) and it said apx 4 ohms...
So, should I sleep on the couch for a few days a fork out the couple of bucks extra to upgrade to an Dyna S ignition (which I know will work really well with the 3 ohm coils). Is there really that much of an improvement with a new ignition even if your stock ignition is running perfectly?

NO, there is no performance or efficiency improvement from the Dyna over the stock electronic ignition.

The Dyna ignition is only an upgrade if you have a points type ignition system with breakers in it. If it's electronic & it works then leave it alone...1980 GS1000G - Sold
