bs 32 ss cv carbs on 650!
I put a new 5/16ths fuel line on but it seems to have caused problems. It seem to vapor lock the petcock.When I take my tank off and put it back on I have to drain a carb bowl to get the fuel to flow in the prime position. THe bike runs fine but will not idle well.Even sitting at a light it will go up and down from 100o to 15oo.If i ride hard and stop fast it will almost die before returning to idle.It never did this with the 1/4" fuel line.Why would the bigger line be different or is there another problem I might have?When I got back from riding to work today the fuel line was half empty and the prime would not work till i squeezed the fuel line like a primer bulb on a lawn mower.Bike bandit says the line is 6 by 10 by 16. Can anyone convert this for me or tell my which is closer to that size, 1/4 or 5/16ths. Also when I hooked up my long 5/16ths fuel line to sync the carbs it would not flow unless i unhooked it from the carbs and opened the end of the fuel line.Any ideas????Help please!!Tags: None

Try this. Remove the gas line from the valve and attach another off to the side. Remove the vacuum line from the carb. With your valve on suck on the vacuum line, if you get gas your valve is good, maybe your fuel line is too small. My bet is your valve is not opening properly or your have a air leak.
Start the motor and spray a little WD30 around the intake boots and air box boots. If the motor speeds up, you have a leak. Do you have an in line filter? If so that may be your obstruction.
You may need a carb cleaning and sync.

Fuel line could be too long- Do you have a filter ? get ride of it if you do!
Check the gas cap vent!

The fuel line does not appear to be at fault here.
Most of your symptoms could be easily explained by a vacuum leak. Do the WD-40 test, or ether, or whatever around the carb boots.
If THAT is not it, something else is causing you to run lean. Have you cleaned your pilot screws lately? Ever? This is exactly how my bike ran before I cleaned those.
Your petcock may not be working properly on prime, but that is not the problem you're describing when you get the bike running. :-) A petcock rebuild kit is in order, but not vital.You'd have to be crazy to be sane in this world -Nero

Thanks for all the posts guys but i found the problem. BAD GAS!!!! i drained my tank and bowls then cut off about an inch of fuel line.Then i filled the bowls and fuel line with spray seafoam followed by seafoam liquid in the fresh gas I put in.After that i fired it up and took off for a good ride.After hauling @#@ for a while I came to a quick stop which before would bring my idle down to 500 before going back up to 1100. It idiled at 1100 and did not drop!It idles smoothly now and the rpm's stay dead on the mark.I got gas at a Q T in a small town by my work not where I usually get it,at conoco.The QT pump was slow and did not have a gas smell to it.I did not pay much attention to these signs as far as being a problem but i guess gas is not the same whever you buy it.Anyway it runs and idles perfect now and that's all that matter's.Thanks again for all your help and concerns.The GS resources and the people on here ROCK!!!! Oh and nebro I have all new boots and o-rings and all the other goodies that you have to do to an old bike when you buy it Plus the petcock works fine now that i cut off about an inch of it.I guess it was too long.Thanks squaredancer lynn.Last edited by Guest; 04-20-2007, 09:02 PM.

Yeah, I've gotten bad gas before1983 GS 1100E w/ 1230 kit, .340 lift Web Cams, Ape heavy duty valve springs, 83 1100 head with 1.5mm oversized SS intake valves, 1150 crank, Vance and Hines 1150 SuperHub, Star Racing high volume oil pump gears, 36mm carebs Dynojet stage 3 jet kit, Posplayr's SSPB, Progressive rear shocks and fork springs, Dyna 2000, Dynatek green coils and Vance & Hines 4-1 exhaust.
1985 GS1150ES stock with 85 Red E bodywork.

Bad gas would give you the exact same reaction as leaky carb boots :-) Water != fuel. Less fuell = lean. ;-)
Gotta love multiple causes for the same problem. I've only run into one occaiton where bad fuel was the problem.You'd have to be crazy to be sane in this world -Nero
