    replace coils?

I just finished replacing the RR, and the stator (someone tried rewinding themselves, and it looked horrible) But anyway I took it out for a ride saturday since it was like 75 and finally nice here in ohio. and it seemed like after it warmed up it lost all power almost like it was out of gas (which is where i was headed, to the gas station) so i turned it on res. and it still kinda ran funny after. so i filled up and went in and paid for gas, and got a drink. when i came out it started right up, and rode fine for a few miles then it started doing the same thing again. i got it home and was looking at everything and noticed that the two exhaust pipes if i am looking at the bike it would be to the left, were not hot at all. my guess is the coils are bad. i did notice last week on some of the colder mornings while riding to work some hesitation when i would gas it. but it ran fine, no backfireing, just hesitation.

i just put new plugs in it before i replaced the RR and stator, which now have about 40 - 50 miles on them or so.

Bike has about 22,000 miles on it, it is a 1981 GS750 L

    sound like coils?

any advice for up grading? or should i stay stock?

Is she on points or electronic ignition?

It doesn't sound like coils to me, had it been 2+3 or 1+4 then yes.

        Have you checked the condensors?

I'm going to sound like a dummy here but have you have checked that you got the plug leads on the right way round?

ok, I'm not too good w/ the ignition system... i was told that it probably had points, but now i am looking on bike bandit. and it shows an igniter unit, along w/ a generator.... does that mean it doesn't have points? electronic ignition? i rembemer seeing the igniter unit while i was cleaning and oiling all the electric connections.

yea, plug wires are all on correct, i was riding it last week and it rode fine, my guess was just since it got warmer the coils are the usual suspect if it doesn't want to run when it gets warmer. when i was riding it last week morning temps were around 40 and it didn't get much warmer than 55 during the day. and it rode sweet, besides the little hesitation.. it wasn't bad it would still go from 45 to 75mph no problem in just a few seconds.

Sounds like a petcock issue. Just get a new one and it will eliminate alot of "issues"
Screw off the spark plug caps and cut a bit off of the plug wire till you have a nice clean copper wire to screw the cap back onto.

Im with the chef on this one. If its a vac petcock make sure the vac hose is not kinked. And yes, do the plug caps. Get 4 new NGKs. Cheap easy project.

yea, i guess that could make sense, because i think i did turn it in the pri possition on the pet cock, and it may have also ran a little better, but not the greatest. i just thought it was weird getting it home and only 2 cylinders getting hot.

If it rode better in cold weather than warm weather, that may mean that you are too rich, and possibly fouled your plugs. Pull them out and look at their color. Is your bike completely stock?

                    Just a thought...

                        fixed petcock, now another issue.

received the parts yesterday, and put on a new petcock in, seems to be running fine now. put it back on the road! thanks alot!

also i think i may need a new rear sprocket(teeth look fine, just not sure if it has a slight bend in it or somthing), any one happen to know best place to get it from / how many teeth? 1981 gs750L . I tried to adjust the chain after i put the new petcock in, and noticed that if it is tight as it should be in the manual, at a certain spot on the rear sprocket it seems to bind up and tighten the chain really tight. played around with the alignment alot last night but no matter how much i did it always would do that. so i ended up just loosening it up. i know it shouldn't be that loose, and pretty sure it is not the chain (made sure all the rollers where free, and all the links were not frozen), although i may want to get one of those too, if anyone happens knows what size that is?

with the bike on the center stand, i put it in first gear and looked at the chain while the back wheel rotated, and it almost looked like the chain bounced quite a bit when it was hitting that spot on the sprocket.

If those are the original sprockets then it's time for new ones (front and rear!). I was hugely surprised how much new sprockets smoothed out my CB750 - and it made things much quieter too.

                            stretched chain

If it's well adjusted in some spots & tight in others you have probably stretched the chain or blown the orings if it's an o ring chain. I used to do that all the time on my 83 gs650e, thank god the 1000 is a shafty or I couldn't keep a chain on it

If you have tight spots in the chain it's time to replace it.

You have a 630 chain if it's stock. You should change the sprockets while you're at it.
                              Chain 630 - 96 links
                              rear sprocket 40 teeth
                              counter sprocket 15 teeth
