GS1100E Ignition Problems and a newbie question

Thanks everyone for viewing my post and checking out my little problem. I'v just aquired a fairly nice '82 1100e that ran awesome for a few days but is now toast.
I'v ruled out the battery, Gas/Carb/Tank-petcock/ and fuses.

Problem is that it cranks over but gives no spark from either coil. No spark to any of the plugs.

I'm in the process of checking the Ignitor with an ohmmeter. (32900-45411) It appears to be a rare one.
Doesnt appear to have any battery charging problems but I wont know untill this mess is fixed.
    Newbie question is:
My oil and side stand light are on when I turn the key ( dont know why they wont turn off when it is retracted and oiled properly)
Im wondering if they could be keeping the coils from firing? Are they kill switches?

My oil light always comes on when I turn the key on and goes off when it's started. I think you may have something with the side stand switch. I do believe it is a kill switch. Bypass it and see if you get spark.

The sidestand switch/light is the same as a kill switch. If the light is on, the switch is activated and the ignition circuit is held open. Faulty kickstand switch. There is a wire gong to the switch and coming from the switch. Its a positive wire. Try a jumper across the switch and see if that gives continuity. (which you must have for the ignition to work)

I just pulled the switch off and cleaned it up and it's quick disconects and no-go.
The light remains on, and after closing the switch (side stand engaged) it goes from bright to brighter.
I suppose Im looking at my first shorted wire, right?

an '82 GS1100E specific color wiring diagram would be really usefull tonight. (looked in the usuall places but no-one has them)

Connect the two wires bypassing the switch. The fault is likely in the switch/internal.

My side stand does not kill the bike. It will start, run and I can drive away (I have) with it down. If I remember correctly (25 years worth) thats the way its always been.

I kinda figured as much. I dont need to bridge the two wires because it is obviously shorting (full on, full time, even with switch removed) and the bike will try and turn over like a healthy beast.. but still no park.
Is it true that I need total continuity to get the bike started? Man Id love to take some time off work today just to get this resolved heh

What Earl is telling you to do is to find the 2 wires that hook up to the switch on the sidestand. Hook the 2 wires from the bikes wiring loom together and don't have the switch hooked up at all. If the stand light goes out and the bike starts you can replace the switch or make the switch bypass permanant.

I'm with Bonanzadave, I don't think the sidestand switch affects the engine operation. Yamaha bikes, the engine would quit if you put the bike in gear with the sidestand down. Kawasaki's you can put the bike in gear, but the eng. will die if you start to let the clutch out with the sidestand down. On my GS's, I can ride away with the stand down, only the sidestand warning light will be on.

                    Another country heard from:

The side stand is NOT a kill switch. At least not for my 82 GS1100E.
It appears to be there to "Warn" you that the side stand is up or down. I can start the bike in any gear and roll away. I found out the hard way when I made my first left turn.
