    took my carbs apart today...need advice

    This is my spare set I bought. I took carb #1 and found no residue of gas or varnish of any kind.

    However, the pilot fuel jet and air jet had a crusty white lime scale substance on it. Any clue as to what that might be?

    What I was wondering is with the lack of varnish could I just pop the top and bottom of the carb and spray heavily in the all the little spaces? I was Trying to avoid scewing up any of the jet settings.

      Don't know what carbs your working on but you won't screw up any jet settings. You need to insure that all the jets are open. (Using a piece of wire; like from a torch-cleaner). YOu should check the float level and make sure the floats move freely.

        Take them all apart, clean them throughly. I don't know how many times you've taken off and put on carbs, but you quickly realize it's a pain and worth doing right the first time.

          Not sure what carbs you're dealing with, but on the early VM carbs the factory put white paint on the pilot fuel and pilot air screws. I think they do it so it makes it obvious if they've been removed before, or are still at the original factory settings. Some of it gets into the threads and it acts like Loctite and keeps them from coming out. Carb cleaner or lacquer thinner will soften and remove it.

            Take the carbs completely apart and soak all the parts in carb dip. I'm not sure what the white residue is but carb dip should disolve it.

            One of the reasons to take the carbs apart is to change all the O-rings. My carbs looked pretty good but when I seperated them the O-rings connecting them together were hard and crumbled. Do it right so you don't have to do it twice.

              Yes, you want to rebuild the old carbs, so you won't have to do it again.
              The o-rings should be replaced on old carbs, anyway.

                they're VM carbs. The factory paint was gone and the screw lines didn't line up with the factory indent so they've been messed with before. I will say this I was pretty scared about taking them apart but they were really easy. I wish there was a more detailed write-up as on the CM carbs.
