    Idle Circuit BSW30's

Well, I'm glad I can finally post something in the tech forum. My bike is back together to the point that I'm trying to tune my carbs. This is the setup:
    -'83 550
    -Kerker II 4:1
    -K&N Filter/Airbox lid is gone
-Main Jets=110's, Pilots increased 1 size

The current issue is that it will only run at full choke, and that gets me about 2000 rpm. Soon as I take choke off, it sputters out. Plugs don't look too fouled when it dies out (I havn't done a very scientific plug chop yet). Tonight I plan to clean out the pilot air jets. I alos want to drill out the plug over the idle mixture screws, but I've yet to find a specific reference to where these are. Can anyone give me their location?

Yup, I've toured the carb cleaning series many a time, but there are differences between the BSW's and the CV's. Apparently my carbs have a pilot mixture screw under some cap that must be drilled out to get to. Nerobro and others have mentioned it before. I just need to know where to look. It was referenced in this thread:

Nick, if you read this, did you ever get that '83 550L to work right, since it was having the same problem as mine?

Your 2-barrell carbs are just a bit different. 8-[

I looked at a bigger version of your attached thumbnail and the part that is called "pilot screw" is #42, which goes in from the side, on the engine side of the carb. It looks different from what I am used to, so would be best to wait for others to chime it that really know what they are talking about. :-|

Yes, the BSW's are the bastard child of the GS line. No one ever seems to want to talk about them!

Very good eye on picking out #42, Steve. I never even noticed that one in the diagram. My POS Clymer manual shows the screw, but doesn't label it. It also does not instruct you to clean any of the pilot air jets, or the passages. I think all manuals should be written based on a vehicle that is 24 years old and has sat outside in Oregon for most of that time. Instead they write about it when its new and you can just pull it apart and put it back together. Anyway, there's my rant about Clymer manuals. :?

When I get home tonight, I'll take a look and see if that screw is covered up.

Do you have the FSM for this bike? There is one knocking about in PDF form on the internet. It is very well detailed much more so than the Hyanes Manual I used once upon a time.

If you want I can dig up the URL for you.

No, I don't have the FSM, just the Clymer and the Haynes is going to show up in a few more days. Having the FSM would be awesome.

As an update, I adjusted my valves on friday, and it is running much better. It will idle now on 1/2 choke and rev up pretty smooth. I sprayed water around the intake boots and sure enough, I've got some serious leakage at the intake. So $87 dollars later I've got new intake boots and exhaust gaskets coming from bikebandit.

If you can find the FSM, I'd be very appreciative.

is the URL you will need to go through the steps of creating a membership

This no more difficult than joining any other forum.
It took a while to download and I think I had to try to doanload several times but this may have been a coincidental issue with my ocal netowrk or machine settings.

Yoiu can drill down to search for the manual for a 1983 GS 550.
I dont think the bikes changed greatly across the years they were sold so this is a good manual for likely all years.

look at the top of the carbs... see where the choke cable goes in? On either side of them should be some bumps... I can't remember if there is a hole in the plug or not but that's where the air mix screws should be.

Thanks for pointing out the location, Skreemer. My PO must have thought he knew what he was doing, because these have already been drilled out. I was confused because I thought they came that way! All this time I've been looking all over my carbs for the other screws to drill out.

And Calvin, as far as this repair manual site goes, I have registered, but have yet to recieve the confirming email that will allow me to download. I hope it eventually works though, as I can also get a manual there for my GN400. Thanks for the hook up.

be careful with those... the heads and threads are bloody soft... if you ground them too solid they'll stick there... and then the stripping of the flathead slot begins...

From the FSM that Calvin hooked me up with, I've got some cutaway shots of these carbs (BSW30's) that show the different circuits. The file's too big to attach here, so if any of you want them, PM with your email address.

                        Here's to the GSR!

FYI: My experience with RepairManualCluc.com has been less than efficient. I've created multiple login's using multiple emails. I've rec'd only one email confirmation which you must have in order to be validated on the site. The single confirmation that I did receive took overnight to arrive. Once I validated, I was psyched to go get my FSM, I logged in, located the FSM, hit download...and hit the wall. I tried several times exactly as directed by the site, but all I got were authorization errors. It has now been almost 24 hours since I attempted to contact the site via their "contact" link, and I've yet to receive a response or even an acknowledgement. I had my suspcicions about this site from the get go, and I'm really leaning toward recommending against it unless things take a major turn for the better.

5/6/07 Upate: Yesterday I took another shot at this. Unfortunately I got more bogus errors and no download. I then tried later in the day from another pc. Voila! Download accomplished! After a mere 1 hour and 39 minute download, I now have a pdf copy of the FSM for my bike! It wasn't "painless", but, ultimately, with perseverance, the site did deliver.

Well its likely running on an inch tall server using limited resources.

I got my ack and download wihtin an hour so I suppose its a case of you get what you pay for.

I was suspicious of the site as well as a potential virus or asware malware delivery mechanism but ran a full av scan using the latest def files from McAfee and have had no problems whatsoever.

There is a warning about hotmail addresses filtering the confirmation they send you so maybe that is at play?

Are those exp difficulty on a clean unfirewalled connection to a reliable high speed internet connection?

You are correct, my hotmail had marked the confirmation email as spam. Once I found it and followed the instructions, the site worked just fine. The format of the site makes it seem shady, with all the cheesy links to goofy sales sites, but it is legit, as far as I can tell. It was a slow download, though. Took about 2 hours to get the ~150 mb file, but it was worth it. Very good link. Thanks!
