Depends on what your looking for...

Regulator/Rectifier on my bike (GS650G) was located on the underside of the frame, behind the battery. Looks like a square 1 inch metal box with some heat-sinks on it. I replaced mine over the winter. Bought new one from Electrosport....its a part that is likely to fail given its function, heat and location...

Stator is on the left hand side (as you're sitting on it) behind that big cover on the side of the motor. Personally I'd find it hard to think it could fail, its just a big wrap of copper that the magnets spin inside of to produce current. I also replaced this copper thing when I did the regulator. Figured this way I"m starting from a known quanity.

Failure of either of these parts won't make you 'dead'. You can run if you charge up the battery first. The battery just won't charge so eventually it will be too dead to crank the bike. Can push start if you need to but I'm told if the battery gets too low you'll shutdown all together.

Its not hard. Getting the side cover off is a &itch. To get the regulator off, you have to take off the 2 bolts that hold its mounting plate in place. This is key....until I had a manual I was trying to get it off 'in place' and just couldn't get onto the bolts.

Combined cost of 2 parts is something like $150.00 or so I recall.

Here's the best starting point. Do you have a manuel? I'm assuming 81 850 is this correct? Take a deep breath, help is on its way.

Until they show up I'll ask some questions. You're sure you have a charging problem? Did you follow the Stator Papers in determining this? Assuming and guessing electrical solutions can get frustrating.:-D . How long ya had this bike? Lottsa 850 fans hereabouts.(Lottsa highmileage riders like 'em.)

What tools do ya got? What level would you rate your mechanical ability? I ask not to judge, but to guide information.

Good Luck! I'll check back later, RJ

my bike doesnt have side covers , i think i know the part you are talking about.. is it mounted to the left of the batter box? small metal box has 2 wires?
i can jump the bike with my car and it will run for a min. once i disconect the jumper cables .. then goes dead on me.

You need to follow the troubleshooting guide step by step. It's relatively easy with a simple meter. You only need to measure Volts & resistance & current from memory.

First thing charge the battery so it's fresh.

It could be dodgy connections or the earth connection between the RR is bad (mine was with similar symptoms & new battery). A clean up & running a 10 gauge earth wire from black & white RR lead direct to the battery cured my problem.

The stuff hereunder assumes that you have a basic knowledge of electricity, up to the point that you know that electricity can be dangerous, and up to the point that you understand the difference between amperage and voltage, and AC and DC. If you don't, please, for the sake of your health and the health of your bike, back off and get some help.

The
above was taken from the FAQ section of the stator papers. Are ya up for the next step?[-o< RJ (The answers are coming.....)

Looking back at your original post,I'm not sure you even have a charging system problem. First thing is to fill, charge and check your battery. We want no doubt the battery is 100% good. Can't do anything 'till we know that.

Kragen are doing new ones for 30 bucks... you'll still need a charger though. I'd be surprised if the charging system is 100% healthy from your description. Only way to check that is with a meter. Pick one up from Sears or similar; needn't be a flash one. Digital in the 15-20 bucks range will do it as long as it does volts, amps & resistance.
