I just remember being able to replace the starter in my GS650GLZ alone, while when the sprague clutch in my new Triumph went out it was definitely a take it to the shop and have it covered under warranty type of issue.

I only wish they mounted it on the front of the engine like my Honda. Removing it without lifting the carbs is a tough job. The rear screw and the starter mounts are a pain to get to and if they are tight, the carbs have to be pulled so you can attack (literally) the screws1981 GS650G , all the bike you need

My thinking is it's not the starter but the starter clutch. I'd bet one or two of the three bolts are sheared off. Have you heard a "Bang" anytime you started before this problem? The stuff thereabouts can get pricey,I'd make sure I was replacing only what was broke. Hopefully our best diagnosticians will help. RJ PS If it is the starter clutch I'll give you any help I can. Mine nearly drove me to tears and it shouldn't have. #-o

update
after taking the cover of the right side of the motor I can see that the starter is turning the shaft. when I push the starter the bike will make the odd "putt" but nothing after. I now think that it might be a carb problem?
Also while investigating a sound, which to me sounds like a loose cam chain I checked the valve clearences. upon doing this it apears that none of my valves have any clearences... I have ordered a valve shim tool and intend on getting new shims...
As for the engine noise the chain appeared to be tight. someone sudgested that it might be an acct problem and since the sound comes and goes I'm guessing that's the problem there...
I also have found another issue that troubles me . haha. turning the handlebars to the right in a certain possition turns the engine off. this has made me decide to park the bike while repairs are made... as I enjoy turning right. The whole bike doesn't short out.. it just kills the engine. all my gauges are still on and such.. So I'm thinking that maybe it's the kill switch pulling apart? or maybe stripped? I have found a general area in the large mass of wiring that if i wiggle just the right way I can mimic the turning right shut off of my bike.
Anywho I should be working instead of finding things to spend money on.. like starters and wiring..
Thanks
