    83 GS450E Ignition Switch Replacement

no, i didn't steal it! i bought a bike from a wrecker that is in otherwise great shape. someone succeeded in busting the ignition switch's casing, so i need to replace it with another switch. the fork lock can engage by itself without the key part in there!

any ideas as to what needs to happen to get that piece out? it looks lik ei may be taking the forks apart as it bolts on from the bottom?

    thanks in advance!

Usually, you can undo the two side bolts that hold the headlight shell to the fork ears and move the shell out of your way. Then you should be able to get to the ignition switch mount from underneath.

You have one of my favorite GS models and year. It's one of the few bikes I would condsider buying if I could find a fairly nice one. It brings back some memories for me, and I kind of like riding a smaller bike from time to time.

thanks for the help! i'll run the motorcycle salvage yard and see if i can't get something used to pop in there, preferably with a key. if not, i'll get a new item.

denydog- i too really like this bike

finally popped into Road Hawk Salvage in Portland, OR and bought a used switch for $25 with only one key (oh well). however it is a GSX key so my bike is now THAT MUCH FASTER after the upgrade!

and as E stated, i just needed to remove the headlight and bezel to get to the switch. installed in 10 minutes or so.

              thanks everyone!
