    clutch cable question!

I just bought a new clutch cable and was wondering if you should put them on and ride or lube it a little first? Never had a new clutch cable before. Thanks for your answers.

Most of the ones that I have seen have had plastic liners. Lubrication would not be out of the question, but any liquid lube you put in there will leave a film that will attract dirt, possibly causing problems sooner. I say leave it dry until you have problems, then flush it out, put a little lube in and ride it while waiting for the replacement that you just ordered to come in.

Thanks steve! I forgot to ask them while I was there because they floored me when I told them what I needed and they actually had one in stock!!! They must have known I was coming! My old one works fine but for 20 bucks a new one give a lot more peace of mind.

        broken cable - no fun

good thing to replace, for sure - I once had an old one break while waiting at a stop light - much consternation.

Installed a new cable on an old 450 I had and was very pleased with the reduction in clutch pull effort. Lube helps when the cable gets old but there is nothing like new. And don't forget to lube the ball end, it reduces stress on the cable and helps prevent breakage.

Is graphite cable lube still available? It is, (was) graphite suspended in a liquid. It came in a can with a tiny metal straw, that would fit in between the cable & the sheath. Squirt the stuff in the top end of the cable, the liquid would drain out the bottom & what's left inside would evaporate, leaving the dry graphite inside to lube the cable.
