1982 gs1100ex chain drive, in good running order, drivin nearly everyday.
1) i removed my sprocket case cover to investigate a rather large oil leak i've been having, I suspected that either the sprocket shaft oil seal or the shift lever seal had gone south on me. To my surprise a screw holding the gear shift indicator had come loose and the wire holder and screw were sitting in the bottom of the case cover.
Upon further inspection of the screw i noticed that the threads (of the screw that had came loose) were full of alluminum. Using my fingernail i cleared the thread of the screw and determined that the screw thread was still in good condition.
I cleaned off the area, indicator and screws etc. and reinstalled both screws to hold the indicator in place, it seems to tighten up well.
Question> i fear that these screws may wiggle their way out again, and though they seem tight, the threads inside the case must be fairly widened to have left alluminum in the screw threads.

Should i /would you use a bit of locktight on them and reinstall, or drill and tap the 2 holes in the case out to the next larger size?
Question>Would you /should i replace the rubber o-ring (i can not find the part number for this anywhere)
2) my second question: the gear shift lever's shaft has a tremendous amount of play (in-out) between a 1/16th and an1/8th of an inch i'd guess. Since the bike is dry i don't know how much oil may be escaping from the seal (it seams like there was some leakage, but is hard to tell with the other major leak that was happening)
Is there a way to tighten this (Shift lever shaft) up from other side of the engine, or would placing 1 more washer behind that circlip be an ok fix? ( i will be replacing that seal )
3) Has anyone replaced the foam that lines the sprocket cover case and is it needed?
Thanks everyone, i am preparing for a long ride this memorial day and don't want to be caught on the side of the interstate with a dry /blown bike!
