Hey, I wasn't trying to SCARE you with that last post, but for the sake of brevity, I didn't type ALL of Step Three, which SHOULD be:

Step Three - Super-heated exhaust valve punches through red-hot piston crown, and falls into bottom end of engine. Valve fragments and piston shrapnel destroy bearings, plug oil passages, and become welded to crankshaft, making grown man cry

I was sure you'd already figured that part out, but for those who read this in the future, and don't know what kind of bad things can happen to an engine, I've witnessed enough engine autopsies over the last 20+ years to know what the full definition of "catastrophic engine failure" really is...

Best of luck to you; I know you'll appreciate what using a real exhaust system will do for engine performance... not to mention the OTHER benefits of proper exhaust backpressure... ride safely, and WE WANT MORE PICTURES! when you install the V&H system...

how many of you guys are running open pipes? are they full length, just header?

my factory exhaust was rusted off right after the header, so i chopped them down to just headers.... i plan to get the v&h 4-1 or comparable within a couple of months...

but for right now i just want to run some pipes to the back just to get the noise away from me.....

When I first got my bike the megaphones were split and rusted off. But the H pipe was intact. What a beautiful sounding bike at high rpms going down the valley running thru the gears Even in town staying off the throttle it wasn't all that bad. Certainly not like a Harley with no baffles that makes ears bleed. I finally got the original megaphones near new off ebay and they are sweet sounding in the original trim Not like driving a formula 4 cylinder thru the esses tho'. That was really loud and sweet. I think you get enough back pressure off the flat H pipe restriction to keep it running good. Sounds like you just sawed off all 4 pipes into the air. That would be bad. Could scavenge all the heat out of the cylinder and do some real damage. Backpressure is mandatory to a point. In the old days Honda put a swinging factory washer inside the exhaust to "open" or reduce the flow/noise for country and city riding.

I used to have a 750 Honda with a 4 into 1 Kerker that I would pull in half once in a while. It was about 3 a inch pipe and wide open right under the foot pegs, Man that thing was loud. A buddy of mine said he could here me start it up from 10 miles away through thick woods. There is no Harley alive that is as loud as that 750 was. Needless to say I didn't leave it that way very long.

Now...doesn't that look better that the "50 cal. machine guns" you had on there? \\/ But, how does it sound? Good looking bike pal!

                  Wowowowowow!

Man, I am AMAZED at how much better that looks now! That V&H 4:1 looks like JEWELRY on your GS; for some reason, I thought it would look better in BLACK, but I can't imagine ANYTHING else looking as good as that does! I'll bet it SINGS now, instead of only SHOUTING... that HAS to be a MAJOR improvement!

If you go to a bigger pipe diameter you'll actually lose horse power on a n/a application. You have to keep the velocity of exhaust gases up because you need to move faster rather than more.

what are your guys thoughts and opinions on this? how loud is it exactly? does anyone have a soundclip?

are there any perfromance gains at all? concerns?

thanks guys for any input provided.....
The Harley guys might actually wave to you with drag pipes, everyone else will be giving you the one finger salute.....

Throttle response, and torque are drastically reduced with open drag pipes on a stock engine.
