    weird noise but from where???

I replaced my exhaust gaskets and th eold ones looked good. There is no sputter like a exhaust leak but I still have this weird noise between 40 and 50mph.Under 40 its not there and over 55 seems ok too.It doesnt happen when going up hill or letting off the gas, just when I'm cruising about 45 to 50 on flat surface.Give it gas ,it goes away, back off the throttle ,it goes away. Now i do have a dent in my #3 header pipe right by the oil pan and was wondering if that my cause a weird noise. It sounds sort of like when you tap on an exhaust pipe and have a ringing effect.I do have a vetter fairing and you can hear it real good when you put your head close to the tank while going 45.has anyone ever experienced this sound before? I have ran over 8000 miles like this and it doesnt seem to effect the bikes performance at all it just sounds annoying. Please help if you can.Can a dent cause this noise????It sounds like it's coming right up out of the fairing.

My guess is that it is a harmonic that sets up at around 5000RPM, not under load, and at a specific RPM range. It is doubtful that the dented pipe is causing it, however, I have heard of stranger things. If you've run it for the last 8000 miles that way and nothing seems to have happened, I wouldn't worry about it. I know that mine sets up a whirr-ing noise at about the same RPM range and the only time I can hear it is when I've moved to the queen seat to stretch out a bit on a long ride. If it were major, you would have posted differently...a long time ago. \\/

Good one chef!!! I dont think it's the wind. It's more like a ringing from the pipes, not a sputtering like an exhaust leak.I do have a fairing and was wondering if it is just feedback from the short mufflers. It does drive me nuts though!Would an exhaust leak make noise all the time?
