Exact Opposite of Oil Indicator Question

    1983 GS750ES
sitting on the centerstand for over a week. Moved it just far enough to get away from the wall. Checked the sight glass.( back on center stand) Oil level completely covering the glass (ahh crap) droped somthing into the motor to check for gas smell, came out smelling only of oil. started it up for just a miniute oil level came back to just over half sight glass. after 10 miniutes

    So my question is?
    1) Could extra oil from the cooler be leaking by the Thermostat valve?
    2) Did I just put too much in when I changed it (3.6 L.) new filtter ?
    3) How long should a bike sit before determining proper oil level?
    4) Should I just drain it & start all over again?

    Thanks in advance
    Pat

3.6 is just fine as the capacity with a filter change is 3800ml. Then you could also asses the difference between it sitting on the centre stand resting on the front wheel or resting on the rear wheel. I find that the way it rests affects how the oil looks in the window.

      1. Don't have any idea! As far as I know they will drain most all the oil to the pan when shutdown unless there is blocakge somewhere.
      2. Sounds OK.
      3. About 5 minutes.
      4. NO! If anything, WHEN ITS COLD, loosen the drain plug slowly until the oil starts to drip out. Loosen further until you can drain out about half a quart and then retighten the drain. Repeat if necessary to get a reading in the window.

When I change or check mine I do it on the centerstand. Its not quite right as the bike is leaning slightly forward, but its close enough. When changing oil and filter, always do both, I add 3 quarts and the use the next to get the level up to the full mark. Then start her up and run it about a minute. Recheck the level and add to the mark again. When adding put in a coulpa ounces at a time and give them about 30 - 60 seconds to run to the bottom.

There is no danger having the oil over the full mark to a point. THAT POINT IS WHERE THERE'S SO MUCH OIL IN THE PAN WHEN ITS RUNNING THAT THE CRANKSHAFT CHURNS IT UP CAUSING IT TO FOAM AND POSSIBLY PUSHES IT AWAY FROM THE PICK UP. I've never heard an overfilled engine run but would think it would hafta make some wierd noises.

Not so much the noise, as the lack of power from the extra drag of the crank running in the oil. On the track, most run a baffle in the pan to prevent the "side load" of oil in the pan, through the corners.
