GS850GT on a bike lift?

    GS850GT on a bike lift?

    Greetings and salutation my fellow GS'rs,

    I'll be purchasing new tires soon, but I'm NOT asking about tires, OK? (And I won't even mention oil. Oops, I already did.) :-D

    Anyway, my neighbor (owns 2 nice Harleys) loaned me his hydraulic bike lift and it's a nice gadget. But, the stock 4-into-2 pipes on my bike are below the chassis. If I were to slide this under my bike and try to lift it (in order to get both wheels up at the same time) the bike would basically be resting on the joints where the two middle pipes meet the outside pipes. This doesn't seem like a good thing to me.

    Have any of you ever used a bike lift on a stock GS850G? Will I damage the pipes if I try to lift the bike? How do you put your bike up so that both wheels are off the ground?

    I appreciate your time and expertise.

    You'll have to remove the pipes to use that lift, BUT! you can remove the rear wheel to do a tire change using the center stand,done it many times, for a front tire change:center stand, then I put a chunk of or stack of wood under the engine at the oil filter lifting the front tire off the ground while on the center stand. You'll find a small tube on the center stand that allows you to lock the center stand down to prevent collapse by sliding a round shank #1 screwdriver into it.BUT using the center stand is a 1 tire/wheel at a time deal.The pipes are easy to remove though.

      ... if the exhaust bolts don't break off in the head, which is a pretty big IF. I can't think of any situation where you'd need a lift badly enough to risk that.

        I have lifted my wife's 850L several times with a lift. I think I might have had to use a shim to level it a bit, but lifting with the pipes has not been a problem (yet 8-[ ).

          Really? It sure would make life easier if I could lift her without wrenching on anything else (or taking a chance of breaking and exhaust bolt, or a pipe). The "L" weighs about the same as the "non-L", right? Do you use a square of wood covered with a layer of cardboard under the bike to distribute the weight more evenly?
