    Checking the oil

Ok, this might sound like a dumb question, but my motorcycle manual does not say.
I have a 87 GS450L, to check the oil should the oil stick/plug be screw in and then unscrew and check, or should I unscrew the plug clean the stick lay the plug with out screwing it in and then check?
It does not have a sight glass.

Plug/screw...turned all the way in, remove and check the hash marks. Ooopps...I said "hash" to the chronoman! Sorry to get your hopes up!

Suzuki factory repair manual specifies that the dip stick is NOT screwed in. Just stick it in down to the threads and pull it back out. In - out, repeat as often as necessary.

Right. And don't forget to add enough oil as well.
