Mounting an 1150 oil cooler on a 1100E
I have an 1150 oil cooler that I will be mounting on my 83 1100E machine. I have the remaining connection parts on order, including the famed 1150 oil filter cover. I would like to see some pictures of members' bikes mounting the 1150 coolers on a 1100 bike. I checked at the Brown County Rally, but there were no examples to see.
Thanks in advance.Tags: None

Just a comment. You MUST use the 1150 oil filter cover. The passages are different in it than they are in the 1100 cover.

If you have a restrictor and oil flows in a different path, I think that would qualify as being different. An 1100 cover and an 1150 cover are not the same because they flow differently. Whch, is exactly what I said. If you use an 1100 cover, you will not get any flow through the oil cooler which makes the installation pointless.

A restrictor plug, such as a drilled rubber plug, will do the same thing. Having said that, one must calculate the correct flow rate for the hole in the rubber plug in order to regulate the correct flow to the cooler versus the extra flow, which goes directly to the filter. I am not trying to argue this point, but misinformation on this issue is rampant and should be dispelled.Last edited by earlfor; 05-21-2007, 10:53 PM.Komorebi-The light filtering through the trees.

I use the stock 1100 oil filter cover with a plug in the passage and I tapped into the two lower bolts below the oil filter cover that leads to the oil cooler. I can post a pic tomorow if anyone wishes.1983 GS 1100E w/ 1230 kit, .340 lift Web Cams, Ape heavy duty valve springs, 83 1100 head with 1.5mm oversized SS intake valves, 1150 crank, Vance and Hines 1150 SuperHub, Star Racing high volume oil pump gears, 36mm carebs Dynojet stage 3 jet kit, Posplayr's SSPB, Progressive rear shocks and fork springs, Dyna 2000, Dynatek green coils and Vance & Hines 4-1 exhaust.

Befind the oil filter cover on the left side there is a port that I plugged that forces the oil through the oil cooler.

Sigh. This is exactly the discussion I was attempting to avoid. The oil flow can be restricted using the 1100 cover. It is not difficult, and the 1150 cover is NOT a requirement. I have found 2 web sites, one of which the pics are broken: http://oldskoolsuzuki.info/index.htm...ation.htm~main Another is around, but I cannot find it in this short notice, and it contains the pictures as well. If you examine the two covers, the 1100 and the 1150, the only difference is that the 1150 cover restricts the oil flow to the oil filter. That is the only difference. A correctly drilled rubber plug (price unknown) will do the same function as the 1150 cover (price twenty eight dollars).
earlfor, my request was for pictures, not a discussion of the differences of the covers. Please respond accordingly.Last edited by Guest; 05-22-2007, 02:31 AM.

Hey man, don't get your panties in a twist. I wanted to see the pics because I would like to know all of the options available.

Seriously, though. I want to see the pictures also. The debate about the cover/plug is one that has been ongoing for a long time. All I asked for is the pictures, not the debate. I guess we will see how things unfold. Or is that untwist?...

My original statement was that the covers are different, which they are. How they are different was not part of THAT point.
Anyway, I'm done with this.
