    1982 GS 650 Question

Ok how can I tell if my 1982 GS 650 is a G, GT, or GL? I think it is a GL based on the gallery you guys have here. The local bike shop manager told me there is a code in the VIN number. Is this true? Thanks in advance!

GL is the cruiser version with small rear wheel, stepped seat, and high handlebars. G and GT are similar. Check the link below and try to find your bike.

Do you have a chain or shaft drive? The shaft has a G after the 650.

There is also a letter at the end that indicates the year. In the case of your '82, that would be a Z. Therefore, you could have:
      GS 650 Z (chain-drive standard)
      GS 650 GZ (shaft-drive standard)
      GS 650 LZ (chain-drive cruiser)
      GS 650 GLZ (shaft-drive cruiser)

Just be aware that the Z will not show on the side covers or anywhere else. It is just to show the year.

To complete that thought, you've got a 650E if it's a chain drive.

Thanks for the info. Mine is shaft drive and from what I can see I think it is a GL. Hopefully when I get it out of the shop and post some pictures you experts can confirm this. SCHWINNNGGG!!
