    GS Stock Muffler Baffle

    Is there a way to take the baffle out of the GS stock mufflers? I love the looks of the 4 into 2 mufflers, but I wish they made a little more noise. It appears to me that the baffle cannot be removed. The end of the pipe is rolled to prevent the removal of the baffles. Is there a way to remove them without destroying the pipes?

    Will removing the baffle hurt the engine?

    Where there is a will there is a way. And, given enough time and/or money, anything is possible. Will it be practical? Probably not.

    Would also help if we had a clue as to what year and model bike we are discussing here.

    Removing the baffle might flow a bit of extra air, and that might require a jetting change in the carbs. How much to change would be a guess at first, and if you don't change the jets, it might run lean enough to do damage.

    Personally, I belong to the "silent is better" crowd. I am looking for something quieter to put on my wife's 850L.

        Sorry, forgot to mention it is a 79 GS 750 L.

        Thats what I was wondering about, re-jetting the carbs. Not sure I want to open that can of worms, now that I have the carbs working well. Also not keen about sawing off the end of the pipes, but I agree, that is what it looks like a person would have to do. Just wondered if there were any other ideas.

              Completely removing the baffels, would make a lot of noise, but not the pleasant buzzing noise of a 4 into 1. If you are going to ruin your stock pipes anyway, why not try first drilling out the little detents in the back of each muffler, If that doesn't suit you, then you can still take the whole thing out. Use a drill appx the size of those detents, & drill as far up in the muffler as the bit will reach, farther is better for more sound. No baffel, loud enough to be very annoying, Drilling somewhat louder rumble, not nearly as annoying as no baffel. Drilling shouldn't make enough difference to need re-jetting.

                Good morning Greg......What the festering frig do you want to get your scooter to make MORE NOISE for? Carving out your mufflers will not make your bike run better. It very likely will narrow your power band putting a peak and or notches at places that may or may not be useful - Same thing as when a tuned header is added except the results have been flowed to determine a particular result. What this means is that you may be on the gears more to achieve a particular driving style (a pain in the arse). Lots of people rejet (or attempt to!) to cover up modifications with varing results - often poor; not covering the running range of the engine - this hurts economy as well. Enjoy your fine bike as designed, leave the blatting to the pigs

                  Just would like to hear the engine a little more, not deafening loud, but at highway speeds with the wind and all it is hard to hear. But I don't want to destroy the pipes as I like the looks of them, and don't want to re-jet the carbs, so will probably leave as is.

                    Suggestion: ear plugs. They filter out the wind and road noise, yet you'll be able to hear the sound of the engine.

                    A full-face helmet with earplugs works great for what you want.

                    I'm glad you'll leave the bike as it is. It will run better, and your neighbors will prefer it nice and quiet.
