    question after sync...Earl...Keith...anybody???

Wow, Its been a long time since i have posted. Anyway after a 2 year hiatus from the GS i decided to work on her again. I have rebuilt carbs again, adjust air screws to the highest idle(got rid of the annoying pop through exhaust), synced and adjusted air screws again after sync. The problem i am having is it wants to idle at 2000 rpms after i blip the throttle from 1000 rpms for about ten seconds then it is back to 1000 rpms and slowly drops and sometimes dies. I did have problems trying the highest rpm but i was patient and listened for sudden changes and thought i came out all right. I thought since it wanted to high idle it sounded like a lean condition but when i pulled the plugs they looked rich (i'll attach a pic). I am stumped from here and need advice. I also noticed there isn't much adjustment left on the main idle adjust screw. What i mean is i can't turn it too many times in before it is out of the thread and the spring is compressed. Oh i want to add plugs were pulled from idle not the "chop method". Help!
    Thanks ,Chris - gs1000dude

What kind of bike are we talking about? Inconsistent idle is often the result of air leaks.

This is the GS1000 with VM26 carbs , pod filters and Vance and Hines 4 into 1. Cant remember the jetting but it has been changed for the filters and pipe, guess i can take a bowl off and look though if that is needed. Thanks, Chris-gs1000dude

Anybody with anymore suggestions. I did replace the carb boots with new ones in 2000 and they may have only seen 500 miles since. Where else should i look for leaks?

Sounds like to me, it is over jeted (too large). When you blip the throttle, you are allowing in more air to compensate for the obvious rich setting on idle. If your idle screw is turned all the way in, in order to keep it running at idle, that also allows the plates to open silghtly more to accommodate for the extra fuel. When you back the idle screw out and the bike wants to die, that strongly suggests a rich mixture at idle and your plugs confirm that as well. What pipe are you running and did you install a stage kit or go it on your own? The following link is for the CV carbs, but is a great step by step for jetting almost any carb set up. Have a look, it may help you trouble shoot. http://www.factorypro.com/tech_tunin...m_engines.html

What are your pilot mixture screws set at? (the ones underneath in the front).

Okay my pilots (under) are 1 1/2 turns out from lightly seated. I took the carbs off since i was so good at it :? and my main jets are 102.5's my pilots are 17.5's my needles are set at the second slot down form the top with a small spacer. I have the pod filters with Vance and Hines 4 into 1 with a baffle. I thought i had the combo correct for pipe and pods but not sure. Does this sound right?
