You may have ruined the tensioner or more if you just simply reinstalled it. If not done as outlined in bwringer's webpage the rod would have been fully extended and they don't back out once they have done so.

Then again, you could put a manual one in it and eliminate the problem.

If one cannot correctly install an automatic tensioner that requires no adjustment or maintenance, I dont see how it could be an improvement to install a manual tensioner that does require adjustment. Seems to be a too hot in the pan so jump into the fire approach. LOL
