83 GS450E Chain and Sprocket Replacement ?s

i read recently that, provided you have the proper chain deflection (20-30mm on my bike IIRC), and pull on the rear of the chain behind the sprocket- you should not see air between the gear and the chain. i can. actually, other than that advice, the time as to replace the chain or sprockets i am still obscure...

i'd like to know;

1) if either sprocket or the chain need replacement
2) if so, might i prefer to change the sprocket ratio, possibly

i think my 83 GS450E is a 530-110 chain with 16/45 sprockets, stock

Do you have any adjustment left on the swingarm adjusters? If so, just adjust the chain for the proper deflection and you are good to go. After you run out of adjustment, it's time for a new chain and maybe sprockets also. Sprocket inspection is somewhat difficult so many people just replace the sprockets when changing the chain.

i can still adjust the chain tight with the rear wheel adjustment. maybe my numbers are incorrect for the deflection of the chain? does anyone know what the deflection should be for the GS450E? i think i have it at around 25mm...
with the rear wheel off the ground, and the proper deflection achieved, should the chain motion be smooth when the wheel is spun? my chain, even lubed, will sort of bounce around a bit when in neutral turning the raised wheel. that is, up and down, not left to right

As you rotate the rear wheel check the amount of chain deflection at several places along the length of the chain. If the deflection is tight in some places and loose in others, you need a new chain. If it's just a matter of a little stiffness in some places try to work some lube into the chain - ride the bike to heat up the chain and hit with chain lube when you stop. Good luck.
