    Ignition question? SUGGESTIONS PLZZ

    Hi all,

    I have a 1983 gs550es with only 15000KM
I am not getting a spark. I have checked my signal generator, Changed my spark plugs, replaced all my fuses, checked all the circuits, checked the coils, bought an ignitor from ebay(NOT SURE IF IT WORKS)(USED),checked all the wires from and to the ignitor and generator(all my reading were alright). all the wires are cleaned and all the groundS seem to be okay.I had the battery hooked up to a wall charger and was reading at 13V. The signal generator is operating. BUT NO SPARK.

    MY QUESTION:
IF I CHANGE THE IGNITOR, WILL IT GET A SPARK?
    BTW.............IM A NEWB AT BIKES(ONLY16)

NEED SOME HELP! REALLY ANXIOUS TO RIDE IT AGAIN!
    THANX IN ADVANCE!:-D

Can you give me a direct link for where to buy an ignitor or the dyna s thingy?

Thank you guys soo much in advance!

No, when installing a Dyna ignition, All the stock ignition components are removed from the bike. The Dyna S "crankshaft trigger/signal generator thats mounted on the breaker plate also contains the ignitor box component.
(amazing how electronics have become smaller isnt it? :-) ) Z1 Enterprises probably has the best price on a Dyna S.

This is for a 700 but most of the tests will be the same for you.

Here's how to check the ignitor. Remove spark plugs 1 & 2 and ground them to the motor so they will fire when they get power. With the ignitor facing you, the plug on the right side of the ignitor is where the signal generator plug fits. The two terminals on the right side of that portion of the ignitor will be pin 1 at the front and pin 2 at the back. The two left pins will be pin 3 in front and pin 4 at the back. Turn the ignition switch on. With a multitester set a the X1 ohm range put the + probe on pin 2 and the - probe on pin 1. Plug number 1 should fire. Next put the + probe on pin 4 and the - probe on pin 3. Plug number 2 should fire. If this happens the ignitor is good and the signal generators are suspect.

As signal generators, measure the resistance between the two wires on each pickup. You should get somewhere around 130-200 ohms. If the resistance is infinity or less than spec they are shot.

To test the coils put one probe of the multitester on each of the terminals on the primary side of the coil. You should get 3-5 ohms. Check the secondary windings by placing one probe into each of the plug wires coming from one coil. Those would be 2 & 3 from one coil and 1 & 4 for the other. You should get 30-50,000 ohms for stock coils and 15-20,000 for aftermarket.

the dyna s doesn't need a separate ignitor module, the whole thing is housed in the pickup assembly.

                      Wow

                      NO WAY
WOW! sorry for being such a noob.
Would i have to change my coils or anything?
I have the stock ones(2) reading at 5 ohms.
So i will just have to wire the new signal generator and cut off the connector for the ignitor box and rewire it for the coils?

                      I HAVE LEARNED SOMETHING!:shock::-D\\/

I also had the ignitor box fail on my bike. I wondered if it was related to the failed voltage regulator rectifier.

Anyway, I re-wired my bike for points and condensers and I am getting ready to purchase a Dyna S ignition. I will scan my re-wire diagram and post it here so you can see how it should be re-wired.

                        Good Luck.

I have a 1980 so I don't have the igniter, but I have heard about a lot of problems with the units, and them being expensive to replace.

It has been suggested a couple of times to install a Dyna S ignition and remove the igniter box since this isn't required with the Dyna.

I have a 1980 GS1000 and removed my points system (doesn't use an igniter) and installed a Dyna S ignition system and it is single handedly the best thing I have done for this bike.

                            Finally

My last question for all you geniuses.

For a 1983 gs550es, could someone plzz give me a link for z1 enterprises?
                            i don't know which dyna s i need??

Here's a picture that is sort of how my bike looks like(except blue and white)

I can't seem to find the right one to go with my bike.
This is probably my last question for yall!
Thanx to everyone who gave me all the great suggestions.

Go straight to the horse's mouth:

Email tech support or call them and ask which Dyna ignition will work on your bike. That will give you a definitive answer.

I'll probably slap a Dyna in my bike if I can ever get the thing running.....^$%#$@ starter clutches......
