    Earthing points

I have run a new from Batt earth to my RR & cleaned up most of the connectors on my bike.

I still get something that looks like a weak earth when using the indicators, the headlight will dim in time to the flash etc. Same when the brake light come on or I use the horn.

Anyone else added an extra earth strap from the battery & if so where did you choose to put it?

Anyone know which earth is for the indicators, that seems a likely first place to look..... \\/

    Cheers,

    Dan

Check & make sure you are not dropping voltage thru the ign switch

Can I just put a meter on each side of it & measure the voltage? I'll have to see if I can get behind there & have a clean up of the contacts etc.

I'm still planning to run at least one more earth though....

Compare the readings from the battery to the Orange wires on the fuse block reading should be the same

The headlight dimming a bit in time with the blinkers is not necessarily indication of a problem. The two blinker bulbs draw about the same current as another headlight bulb, and the charging system just can't handle it all. Some bikes have one tail/brake bulb, others have two. If yours is one of the models with two, the same thing is happening. The two brake filaments draw the same current as a headlight bulb.

Put a voltmeter across the battery terminals, start the bike. At idle, measure the voltage, then turn on the signals and measure again. My guess is that you will see the voltage fluctuating with the signals.

How old is the battery? This might be one of the first indications that it is time to replace it.

As for another ground, you can run one to any of the engine case bolts under the carbs. I picked one right in the middle which also held a strap for some of the wiring. I also used a spade connector instead of a ring so I only had to loosen the bolt slightly to hook up the ground.

Well I have the equipment & wire etc to add another ground so I might just do it for peace of mind. A couple of grounds go to a bolt on the battery box side plate so it's only getting earth through multiple bolts etc. Might run one there & a 2nd to the engine, can't hurt.

Steve - I wondered the same, it only does it with indicators, horns, brake - all extra loads in fact. I have an aftermarket stator (all 3 wires are white) & when I was playing with the rectifier the charging voltage is not quite as high as some (13.6v from memory) but it was very consistent at all RPM's.

The battery was new just before I bought it so approaching 1 year, seems to be strong & it's always done this so probably not that; although 1 cell was a bit low on water when I checked it (but it hadn't been checked for at least 6 months probably longer).

Thanks for the help as always!
