Need Help Removing Gear Shift Linkage

It must be amusing to the people that design these things anticipating someone like myself coming along trying to remove it. I'm talking about the little clip that holds on the shifter linkage. Is there any kind of special tool I can get to remove it? I've gotten really good at spinning it around, but I'm over that now and would like to move along.

you need a snap ring tool. similar to pliers, it has little pegs to spread that ring and pull it from its recess. like this, but they come in MANY forms:

get one at your local auto store (NAPA, Autozone, Schucks, etc)

That would be called a snap ring/circlip plires...go to the auto parts store or Sears, or give Snap On a call. If you can, get one with the interchangeable tips and reversing direction.
