What kind of bike do you have? My GS1000 only calls for 3200 mL of oil - 4 quarts would be about 3/4 quarts too much. -
GS550E calls for 3.3 (rebuild spec) so I'm about 3/4 quarts highComment

Take the plug out and put it back in while the oil is draining. I just changed my oil and filter and I coulda swore my bike took a little over 4 qts. Ok, I see. You've got a 550.Comment

Look on the clutch casing. By the fill plug there's a figure whihc is how much oil the engine should have inside. If you've changed the filter add about a pint more (500mls here in the UK.)

why not just loosen the oil filter cover? that should drain a bit of it without risking losing it all.Comment
