What kind of bike do you have? My GS1000 only calls for 3200 mL of oil - 4 quarts would be about 3/4 quarts too much.

Take the plug out and put it back in while the oil is draining. I's a little messy but at least you won't throw away good oil.1983 GS 1100E w/ 1230 kit, .340 lift Web Cams, Ape heavy duty valve springs, 83 1100 head with 1.5mm oversized SS intake valves, 1150 crank, Vance and Hines 1150 SuperHub, Star Racing high volume oil pump gears, 36mm carebs Dynojet stage 3 jet kit, Posplayr's SSPB, Progressive rear shocks and fork springs, Dyna 2000, Dynatek green coils and Vance & Hines 4-1 exhaust.
1985 GS1150ES stock with 85 Red E bodywork.

I just changed my oil and filter and I coulda swore my bike took a little over 4 qts. Ok, I see. You've got a 550.

Look on the clutch casing. By the fill plug there's a figure whihc is how much oil the engine should have inside. If you've changed the filter add about a pint more (500mls here in the UK.)

why not just loosen the oil filter cover? that should drain a bit of it without risking losing it all.
