    GS550 Exhaust Question

Does anyone know the difference between the early 550 exhausts (77-79)and the later version (80-82)? The carbs changed from VM to CV in 1980 but I don't understand what the differences in the exhaust are.

I have a nice '81 GS550T model and was wondering if the exhaust would fit in my '79 GS550E?

    Any help appreciated.
    Ed

the exhaust on the early is missing the little plug in on the bottom. which the later 80 -82 has. the earlier is also a little shorter so u will have to make a hole to mount up to frame in rear.

yay a question that i can finally answer:-) i had broken exhaust on an 80 and put 79 on ;-)

only prob there would be for u is the 81 would be just tad bit to long but same aspect lies there

Thanks for the response but I don’t understand what you mean regarding the missing “plug on the bottom”. What kind of “plug” are you referring to and what does it do?

So apparently the muffler mounting holes don’t line up with those on the frame hangers. Will I have to fabricate conversion brackets or just drill a new hole in the muffler brackets?

Lastly, if anyone has some decent quality inner head pipes they don't need please shoot me a PM. I bought a set of mufflers but they do not come with the inner pipes so I'm going to have to pick up some of these from somewhere...

      Thanks.

u will just have to drill a hole. on 81 the pipes connect on the bottom about the middle. on the 79 they don't

Ah, so the later exhaust has a crossover pipe. :-D I'm going to have to come up with a set of inner header tubes it seems to match the outers that are attached to the mufflers.
