    GS550E won't Idle for long.

    Hello all,
I haven't ridden a bike in about 20 years. I recently got a '80 GS550E. It runs good but won't idle for long. It does idle high for a bit then low, then dies. Also dies at stop signs if I am not careful.

I was told when I got it that the rubber boots on the carbs (2 in particular), needed to be replaced because they were cracked and causing a vacuum leak. I have looked at the boots and they seem pliable enough, just wondering how accurate this information was or if it could be something else.

I am wanting to just replace what needs replaced now, and work on restoring it slowly as I ride.

    Thanks

Might be the carb boots, but is more likely the o-rings between the boots and the head.

Could very well be the Orings. You need to replace them & take a close look at the intake Boots

        Hello Mr. Raeldin,

Welcome to the GSR forums. My esteemed fellow forum members speak wisely. Make sure there are no air leaks, from airbox to O-rings. Air leaks sound like your culprit but I might also add that, depending on the history of the motor, a valve clearance check may also be in order.

The great folks here know all you could possibly want to know about these classic bikes. They are even making a motorcycle mechanic out of me!

        Thank you for your indulgence,

        BassCliff

Long time getting around to this but I did replace the boots and 2 had broken o-rings.

The bike ran great, started great, several times until I pushed it down off the center stand to ride. It won't start at all now.
Opening a new thread for the new problem.
