Throwing around ideas for a custom exhaust...

So I've been considering doing a custom exhaust job since I got the bike. I looked at the 4-1 aftermarkets that are available. They're f'n expensive, but since I've seen how much stock exhaust goes for, I wasn't wanting to cut up my stock set to make a custom set.

Well, I noticed the other day that a small bit of rust on one of my pipes is actually a nice hole. I had just got my bike warmed up for a ride, and realized that there was a pulsing "breeze" blowing on my leg that increased when I revved the motor, haha. =)

Since I have a hole in my stock exhaust, I now won't feel bad for cutting it all to Hell to make something different.

What I'm thinking about doing is cutting off the mufflers at the front foot pegs, then getting some short (14" or so) glass packs welded on, and then blacking out my whole exhuast.

Ideas? Suggestions? Anyone ever done something like this, and if so, how did it sound? Will I need to rejet?

If you want to keep a fairly stock look a guy that used to post here regularly has a set of these on his bike. They look and sound great. They are Dunstall replicas. They can be had on Ebay.

I'm actually not too worried about keeping a stock look. I plan on slowly getting the whole bike blacked out.

Stock Harley mufflers are plentyful since 90% or more of Harley owners take them off for something louder. Shouldn't be too hard to graft some on. Seems like a reasonable low budget approach.

If you already have a chrome exhaust you're going to have a tough time getting paint to stick. If you want a blacked out system watch Ebay for something cheap.

Well, the new pieces wouldn't be chromed, so I would think that the paint would stick fine. As for the headers, I suppose I could always exhaust wrap the headers down to the point where the new pieces are welded on.

With black cans and midpipe the wrap probably would give the best effect.
