    Gs650g

    It's an '82 model.
    Couple quick questions...

    Carbs seem to be clean and it's running but it seems like it's still lacking power. Almost like one of the cylinders isn't running as well as it should be. I plan on replacing the plugs/wires firstly. Any other obvious things to check?

    Another thing, it's hard has hell to get it into neutral when it's running. When it's off it'll switch right in, but when it's running in first with the clutch in I can't get it to switch in to neutral for the life of me! Any ideas?

    Clutch is dragging. Try easy first stuff, adjustment. If still no good you may have to take it apart and inspection/replace as needed.

      Adjust with the cable at the levers/crankcase? Or is there another kind of adjustment?

        You want a 1/16th or 1/8th" play at the lever on the handle bar.Neutral is just a half step so be easy when "feeling" for it.Sometimes it's easier if you shift from 2nd to nuetral.Just a slight touch should do it.

          I'll try adjusting the cable a bit. When I'm in 1st, just sitting still, I can't get it OUT of first at all. It also inches forward when I give it gas with the clutch down. Once I let the clutch out and get going it shifts fine, though. It also shifts smooth as day when the engine is off.

            Assuming you have a manual you might want to do the adjustment down at the clutch pushrod.

                Have you changed the oil lately?Dont forget about the drain plug under the shifter for the tranny.

                  Yes, clutch dragging. Probably cable adjustment like Nessim and tconeryroy have said. Take your Clymer manual and two 10mm wrenches and adjust the cable. Really all that you are doing is just adjusting (at lever and/or/and/or at clutch) so that when the lever is released the clable has just a little little bit of slack, just enough so can just wiggle the lever before it pulls the cable taunt. Are not really adjusting the "Clutch", are not adjusting where/when the clutch engages, are adjusting the cable so that the cable is not at all pulling on the clutch mecanism when the clutch lever is released.

                  About not having power,You mentioned changing plugs and wires. Some comments:
                  - Changing plugs a good idea if you dont have much history with the bike. BUt another benifit would be to be able to look at and see the condtion of the plugs, "Read the color" or "read the plugs". Can search here or elsewhere for more about that.
                  - You mentioned changing the wires. The wires really are not inteneded to be changed. The wires Are part of the coils(s), potted/sealed inplace. Well, they Can be cut/ pulled/dugg/hacked out and replaced with standard stock bulk ignoition wire if needed, but not really intended to be replaced. The wires are not resistor wires like automotive, so they dont really deteriate/breakdown like automotive wires do (well, not the conductor anyway). Now if the rubber is deteriated and cracked that is a different story.
                  - Your concern about the wires detererating and needing to be replaced is a valid concern for the spark plug caps, not the wires. The caps have the resistor that does deteriate over time/usage. The caps do easyly twist off the wire and can be replaced, and are like $5 a piece or maybe less (caps for two inside cyclinders are differnet than the two outside) . ANd in my experince the caps are the most likley cause if ignition trouble (well other than if you have the contect point contacts of the pre 80s).

                  I had a 82 650G, only new vehical I ever bought. Had it for 20+ years (pic on my webpage).
                  Sometimes wonder where it went.

                      Yep, I changed it about 100 miles ago. I'll probably drain it and replace it again soon. I think there's a small leak at the shifter shaft. Is this typical? It's either there or one of the rear oilpan bolts.

                        I am wondering why an 82 650G has a chrome fender. Mine had plastic fender colored/striped to match tank.
                        Speaking of stripes, looks like the side panel has been repainted.

                        Texas you say. If you are anywhere near central or south central Texas, or if you like riding a few hundred miles: Keep an eye out in the MeetingPlace forum for "Texas Hill COuntry" ride. THose guys get togeter in spring and fall. I went once in 2005, just showed up and was welcomed along.

                              Nice bike, I also noticed the chrome front fender. Mine is the same paint scheme as the tank, black with the gold stripe(?). Anyway. The dragging clutch has been pointed out. Might I also suggest cleaning the air filter and checking if your fuel petcock is leaking. If it is leaking it will drip gas into the vacuum port on the #2 carb resulting in a rich mixture for that cylinder. Bad petcocks seem to be a pretty common problem. Good luck.
