    Beefing up the 650

Sorry guys, posted this thread in another category by mistake. If anyone knows how to remove it please do, or let me know how to. the original msg i meant for this area is.....

Looking to give the ol girl a bit of an overhaul. --> 83 GS650 Katana (shaft drive). I will not pretend to be the mechanical genius here, simply because I am not one. This is where you guys come in.....[-o<

In a bike of nearly 25 years of age, what parts will need to be replaced? I hope that what ever work I do, will last me say another 10yrs at least. The bike is running reasonably well. Slow to start up at times but once she is warm, nothing can stop her. This is more of a proactive maintenance job for me.

This might be a good time to replace what ever parts I do, with newer or compatible performace enhancing parts... if there are any out there?

Parts within the motor (i have a limited knowlege about the mechanics of a motor) which can be upgraded?

I have read a few threads about pod filters (i like the look of them) and jet kits for the carbs. The bike already has a 4-2-1 exhaust, old and a bit ratty, probably needs replacing.

Are there any 4-2-1 exhausts that come in black as standard? I have seen a few crome or s/steel looking jobs out there but i definately like the black ones.

dyna ignition? any ideas about this? I have seen a few threads on it but nothing I could see for the 650

Like I was saying... not after 'out of this world performance', just a little boost and a reliable ride is all i am after.

If people could list parts and if possible, where to get them from (anywhere in the world) would be greatly apreciated

Before doing any tear downs do a compression test. But first I'd adjust valve clearance. If compression is good a simple carb cleaning should do the trick. carb cleaning series

Also check your charging system here stator papers

    4-1 exhaust

I don't see a Dynojet kit for your bike.

      more questions

Does anyone know where I can get any of the following done or any of the parts from (if they exist) or some sort of compatible replacement?

      All for the 83GS650
      - oversize pistons
      - valve springs
      - i have found a gasket kit, valve seals and rings on ebay
      - any compatible fuel injection
      - o-rings
      - hoses for engine

If from austraia it would be better but if not anywhere is fine.
Has anyone had some good experiences dealing with a mechanic that does machining work for bikes in Victoria, Australia?

Any other ideas would be great

        o-rings

For the oversized pistons check the micro-fiche Here. See crankshaft and look for the last portion of the part number for piston set ends in 050 which is .5mm overized or 100 which is 1mm oversized. See camshaft/valve on the same micro-fiche for valve springs.

Go to your local auto parts dealer for hoses.

        FI????????????

I have not had the bike for too long. Always ridden bikes that i would describe as being a little bit more wound up.... but.... the GS650 is the bike I have always wanted. It has a shape that appeals to me. It is perfect.

In saying that, I wouldn't mind letting her breathe a little bit better and improve some of the components that will be a little worn and in need of replacement. So.....

Might as well get a little bit more power into it while i am at it... just as you were saying, a bit of a ... sleeper... it keeps the original look and super smooth gs shaft drive feel to it...

So, please keep the info coming through... I have some great ideas that i want to kick around now, but I am sure they will progress quicker with some more info from everyone, as I am sure some of you will have had similar experiences...

            Cheers

              fuel injection

Does anyone know if there is a fuel injection system that is compatible to the GS650? Is it worth while going down this path?

You would always do the megasquirt or microsquirt or whatever they are calling the bike kit now. Its a lot of work but might be worth it to you.

Does anyone know what that microsquirt or megasquirt thing is? I am guessing some sort of injection? any ideas of boost in power / cost figures?
