    smoke from exhaust pipe???

Hello, this is my first post on GS and i love the site. I have a 1980 gs450l with stock exhaust. I am in the process of getting the bike up and running. The exhaust pipe on the left side smokes very little after running it for a couple minuets. It is a very fine smoke, white in color and what gets me is that it smokes where the pipe starts to run parallel with the bike (directly underneath the gear box and gear shifter). There is a fine smoke that comes out before it can even reach the muffler. There are no holes in the muffler to let the smoke escape. I am absulutly stumped and could use any and all advice and suggestions. Has this happened to anyone before?
    Thanks,

    John

Check for a drain hole in the exhaust. Suzuki put them in to let condensation get out - at least my 550 has them.

Check for oil leaks around your oil pan... sounds like oil is dripping onto the exhaust and burning off smoke after the exhaust gets hot.

Maybe it's 'ghost smoke'. You know, the magic kind that can move through the wall of the exhaust pipe.

          *ooooooooooooo* (scary ghost noise)

Howdy John.....That's most likely, steam from condensation in, or around, the exhaust at that point. You mentioned left.......and with the bike leaning on the side stand, this is the side condensate will more likely collect.
