GSX starter motor compatibility

I´m looking for a new starter motor (from ebay) for my 1980 GSX 1100 because the old one is a piece of crap. All I here is the snapping of the starter relay which is really annoying. The armature is worn and the brushes should be renewed too frequently so i think its time to renew tho whole thing.

Is there someone who knows which starter motors are compatible with my old one. GS -series from 1980 - ? and 550-1100?. What about gsxr´s? Please help because there arent too many GS 1100 starters available here in Finland?

I have swapped starters between GS750, 1000, 1100 and 1150 chain drive models between 1979 and 1985 years. They have all had the same mounting pattern and fit perfectly. Other models may/might fit, but I havent tried them.

Geek time!!!

Suzuki starter motors 31100 (they all start with that) are model specific according to the parts microfiche.

However.......31100 49050 will fit early 400,550,750,1000 and the 1100G's only.
31100-45040 was fitted to the GT750, 750, and 1000 only.

Now big question, which GS1100 do you have? An E or a G?

He mentioned that he has a GSX1100. That means he has an "E" model, in European nomenclature.

My starter motor part number is 31100-49210 and it has two brushes. It seems that the only chance of getting a working starter is to get a new one with exactly the same part number... damn!

This is interesting; the part number of my starter motor is 31100-49210 (silvery letters on a green background, in ND sticker) like it is supposed to be. There are several possible starter motors with that same part number available in ebays around the world, which is great.\\/

The not so great part is that the second number in my starter motor (written on green letters on silvery background under the part number) is 028000-6850. The sticker is quite worn but i can see the serial on good light - What the hell does that mean!?! All the starter motors abailable in ebay have number 028000-6851 instead - the last digit is different! 8-[

What is the purpose of that second number and what is the difference between 6850 and 6951? Or is it just some kind of typo happened in Nippondenso factory in 1980 and just a few bikes have that incorrect second serial number? Or does it really make a difference. I´d like to be sure before bying a 120 $ starter motor which actually is´t even the same. Why is this always so difficult!

For the GS series ther are 2 basic starters a 2 brush & 4 brush both can be interchanged. I would bet a starter from an 850 would work just fine. Should be lots of them even in Finland
